Lieu to Trump on spending bill: You got rolled
The Hill ^ | 03/23/18 | JOHN BOWDEN

Posted on 03/23/2018 10:21:47 PM PDT by aquila48

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu (Calif.) taunted President Trump on Twitter Friday evening after the president signed a massive $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill. Trump threatened to veto the bill before ultimately signing it, decrying the bill's lack of funding for his border wall proposal.

Lieu mocked Trump on Friday after the bill's signing, saying that Trump was "rolled" by Republican leaders in Congress who failed to secure a deal with Democrats over border wall funding or a legislative fix for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients.

"Dear @realDonaldTrump: You wimped out. You failed to deliver on your veto threat. Now we in Congress will believe you even less," Lieu tweeted.

"The Republican controlled Congress just rolled you. And they will roll you again. Because when the moment of truth came, you showed great weakness," the California lawmaker added.

Isn’t it funny how Ryan, the little deep state rat, has decided not to run again. Apparently it’s all about personal enrichment and not about serving your country. Now that the party is over for individual enrichment no point in being there.

Great point. Also Gowdy, he of “ ask tough questions” but let Hilly slide on Benghazi. Throw Chaffitz into that mix also, another kabuki theater performer...

“This was an omnibus............not a budget.
President Trump can choose what is spent on what.”

You’ve never been part of the appropriations process, have you? There simply is no discretion involved once an appropriation is made. Once money is appropriated for Item X, it gets spent on Item X. Period. Any proposition to the contrary is delusional.

Tell that do the bodies of 180,000 dead babies that our tax paying money will go towards to butcher over the next 6 months. WITHOUT SO MUCH AS A PEEP FROM DONALD J. TRUMP!

Wrong again. Look closer. And—by the way—there was definitely a "peep". If you don't support this President, you don't belong on FR.

Excuse me, but we said exactly the same thing last Spring, when Trump signed a bad spending bill, with no wall funding, and he promised it wouldn’t happen again. Then, in the fall, it happened again. Now, it’s happened yet again.

Is this what 3D chess looks like?

September is when we’ll see.

After the first spending bill to prevent a gov shutdown Trump said wait till next time and I will fight for the wall. After the second spending bill to prevent a gov shutdown Trump said wait till next time and I will fight for the wall. After the third spending bill to prevent a gov shutdown Trump said wait till next time and I will fight for the wall.

Do you see a pattern here?

Impeached on what charge, specifically?

It is Mueler's job to fine one and he is hard at work, thanks to the coward Sessions. The Marxist intent to make an example of Trump. This spending bill is just the beginning.

I must say it has been encouraging that so many people here have had a positive attitude towards this. I was very disappointed. So I take comfort that many smart people here are telling me to be calm and carry on and have faith.

Thanks to all of them!

Then why did Trump ask for funding for his wall, if he can do it without the authorization and funding he sought - and wasn’t given? Unfortunately, he is not taking your advice, but is following Ryan instead

Because he is taking what is called a preventive measure with the wall. It is not the highest priority item. It is also not the only thing you can do for border security because of new breakthroughs in technology. You obviously do not understand the needs of the defense department which are very serious right now. We have serious daily operational deficits and long term investment needs for new weapons systems and technology which cannot wait. I am involved in our defense community and know these things intimately. The POTUS had a very tough decision to make and if he had the political leeway to veto this bill he would have but unfortunately he did not have it. Obama’s did great damage to our Armed Services and they are higher priority than a wall at this time.

I have said this once on another thread but will repeat myself.

Trump needs to abandon this border wall he has wedded himself to. I say forget that and dig into some of that DOD money along with the $1.5 billion for the wall and tell the corps of engineers to start throwing up a double fencing system. Its faster, cheaper, you can see through it for observation and less repugnant to ranchers and municipalities. Two rows of fence with concertina wire on top and a path in between for border patrol trucks would provide a pretty effective barrier.

I let my emotions control me yesterday but after breathing and reading up on the actual bill, I think you are spot on. The way I understand it is Trump spends money on the projects within the omnibus that HE wants to as he is only obligated to follow the budget that Congress passes, not an omnibus. With Obama, they continually passed omnibus bills but he was more than happy to spend as much money as possible so all of the pet projects were funded within the bill.

If I have this wrong, PLEASE correct me!

I think the argument for a wall is that it will stay in place and not require repairs - that won’t be made - by future administrations. Notice that even Ryan and Flake are ok with “fencing”. If you want something that works, you follow Israels lead and build a wall

It doesn’t give him the immigration money and tools he asked for. He can’t spend money that congress doesn’t provide. In fact, it specifically prohibits use of his border wall prototypes. And it keeps funding sanctuary cities. He can’t cut their funding without congressional approval

That is how I and others understand it to be. Some others see it differently, however.

That’s why obama never passed a budget in 8 years(!) He just used the Omnibus.

Please tell me exactly what I should be looking for and please give me a link to where Trump said anything about being disgruntled by giving Planned Parenthood 500 million dollars. You are the phony that needs to find another website.

“Impeached on what charge, specifically?”

They will make one up - it doesn’t matter what it is if Democrats get the House they will impeach - and if Republicans don’t gain seats in the Senate - some R’s will join the D’s and convict, removing him from office never to hold office again.

The impeachment of Clinton for (1) perjury and (2) obstruction of justice were actual crimes that clearly fit the “high crimes and misdemeanors” standard. He was proved guilty - yet the Senate showed that the process is ultimately political - not criminal in nature. The only way to avoid impeachment and conviction is to gain seats in the Senate and hold the House to show that he has support, as upset as we all currently are with the Omnibus.

But doesn’t the fact that this is an omnibus and not a budget (which POTUS must follow if passed by Congress) change the way the money can be spent? In an omnibus, the appropriations are a “suggestion” that POTUS can choose to follow or not. For 8 years, Obama had an omnibus to work with and he would spend money where he wanted or not at all.

Sure, he’s not getting the monies he wanted for the wall, but does it really matter if this omnibus will be used how he wishes, like his predecessor? You say he is still funding sanctuary cities, but if this is just a suggestion, like Obama claimed, can he just hold back the funds?

“To reiterate: the President of this Constitutional Republic is in the midst of fighting off an overt and ongoing criminal conspiracy—literally an attempted coup—fomented by the Deep State, the Democrat party, and large elements of the GOP itself! Essentially, the entire Establishment Swamp is waging war against We the People, our President, and our entire Constitutional system!”

So doing something that alienates and depresses a huge chunk of his base is going to help fend off the hyenas. Makes absolutely no sense. Whatever power he has comes from us the people who have been his avid supporters. Kicking us in the gut can only accelerate his demise.

And the military thing is just a really lame excuse. There is no urgent military threat and funding new armaments that take decades to build for an increased feminized armed force doesn’t address any urgent threat if there was one in the first place.

The threat that we the people that elected him see as a high and urgent priority is the continued cultural decline of our society as a result of unfettered immigration, government funding of leftist institutions, exploding debt, PC, feminization of the military, etc. In other words it’s the cultural war not the military war.

He instinctively understood and tapped into that anger of ours and got elected. By breaking that trust he dug himself a big hole that at the moment I don’t see how he’s going to dig himself out of before November.

“This was an omnibus............not a budget.
President Trump can choose what is spent on what.”

Unfortunately the Presidential long held ability to impound and not spend appropriated fees was taken away by the 1974 Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act.

Trump does have an opportunity, however, to turn the tables on Congress. While he cannot individually impound funds, he can request Congress rescind specific items. He needs to start immediately taking this action - start with some truly outrageous items that are included in the 2000+ page monstrosity. Congress will then have 45 days to approve his rescission request or the money will be spent.

Time to mobiize the troops to inundate Congress with support for individual rescissions. Force Lyan Ryan and Malleable McConnell to get a spine and at least clear out the waste.
