A shutdown would have been the final nail in Trump’s political coffin. His own party would have rushed to impeach and convict him, once the Democrats started using their propaganda arm (the MSM, where almost all Americans get their information from) to hammer them into mid-term oblivion. You aren’t dealing with an educated public...they won’t get it and they don’t care.
It (the U.S. government...and the country) is a lot further gone than you see. Trump’s situation is that of a guerrila movement against the most established power base the world has ever seen. He’s going to take casualties and defeats.
