Doing a stress test, which might cause overstress, while cars and people underneath? Incompetence.

There are things that go beyond incompetence and become criminal negligence. Allowing a stress test while people are underneath is one such thing.

I'd like to see arrests, and cancellation of PE certifications of the supposed "engineers" who allowed such incompetents anywhere NEAR the project.

Munilla Construction does a lot of military contracts.....so donations to politicians are going to be part of this.

I’m sorry, I am missing something. What’s your point?

And at what risk to our service members? This company should be shut down for incompetence. Especially as reports say this isn’t their first accident. How about some accountability?

Someone on a post yesterday posted something in a comment from a news story that was talking about how wonderful it was the the designer of this bridge was a woman. This woman was quoted as very proud to see her daughter learn of what women can do, or some such. I have searched for such a story, but I can’t find it.

I’m going to take an early guess and figure it’s a combination of poor or degraded material and poor workmanship

“Let’s wait until cars are stopped right beneath the bridge before we perform the stress test.”

A local media outlet reported last night that there was at least one employee of FDOT on site at the time of the accident.

What did FDOT know and what did it approve /sign off on?

I must say the minute I saw Rubio sweating on tv last night, I figured something was up.

It was stressed, all right. Was the concrete inferior, too, or just the design?

No minority feelings were hurt during the design and construction of this structure.

I’ve seen too many times engineers with no mechanical aptitude rely on software.

“perhaps too early, just looking at possibilities.”

It took months for the roadside build of the now-failed span.

Wondering here if any delays or errors that could have resulted from Hurricane Irma may have contributed to the failure.

Cuban exile family’s firm wins $66M contract to build Guantánamo base school

~snip ~

The 112,000-square-foot school, with space for 275 pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students, is one of the most expensive to be built by the Department of Defense — $240,000 per school child by a firm whose headquarters is in Miami-Dade County, where a new school costs perhaps $30,000 per student.

Seems awful inflated, but, Gitmo is an island, everything would have to be shipped or flown in, fwiw.

As several of the earlier commenters have noted, a whole lot of designer hubris as well as Florian political ignorance is evident. The designer was trying to make a “technological statement”

Obviously if a center bent had been used the bridge would have been much cheaper and several people still alive today!

This was the wrong project to experiment with “prestessed concrete truss bridge superstructures!

“This was a very long span and then they used very heavy material,” he said. “The majority of pedestrian bridges are steel.” Steel bridges are about one-tenth the weight of concrete, he said.

...

I’ve seen long steel pedestrian bridges over the turnpike for decades. They are probably a lot cheaper, too.
