A whistleblower in the southern California construction industry says illegal alien workers have taken over every trade in the business while driving down wages by an estimated 40 percent.
...
Blaine Taylor, the whistleblower, said the construction industry in California once offered a starting wage of about $45 an hour in the late 1980s. Fast-forward to 2018 nearly two decades into when illegal aliens began flooding the industry he now says that wages have fallen by more than half, standing at just $11 an hour.

Why confuse the issues of regulations with illegal labor? What is the point except to muddy the waters?
Should I use all capital letters?
The unions love it. They pay dues
“Building a house or commercial structure got cheaper due to illegal alien labor just when, exactly?”
It certainly is MUCH CHEAPER in Texas to use non-union types to build houses than union boys...not even close.
As to California, the same is likely true, but you can thank the cost of land and the local/state regulations for not letting the price of housing reflect that.
As to the contractors pocketing the difference, you’re not one of those types who thinks that Exxon gets rich just because the Arabs raise the cost of oil, are you?
I have a feeling the unions don't care, as long as the illegals pay union dues too.
From $45 an hour to $11 an hour. Yep, that’s MORE than half.
Actually you can. The unions have accepted illegals into their apprentice programs and they use them as grunt labor. SEIU showed the way. Illegals pay dues and arent demanding
Whistle blower? The only people who need a whistle to be alerted to this fact is Stevie Wonder and ignorant fools living a bubble world.
When we started closing down trade/vocational schools we opened the door to cheap labor.
Builders hire one trade contractor who’s legal and he hires all illegals.
I agree, but have you not just described the socialist paradise? The money flows to the government who then distribute some of it back to the enslaved population. Control baby! Control!
I’ve had a few houses built and never has the cost of labor gone down. There are very few options now or going back at least ten years for anyone other than apparent illegal aliens. There are no union types building houses.
You’re not one of those types who thinks illegal alien labor is a good thing, are you? Because you sure sound like one.
Go after the businesses!
And yet, California housing costs are still the highest in the country. So much for the argument that illegal labor results in lower costs.
Outside of union areas, try to find a roofer that speaks English.
When I got my roof replaced a few years ago, the crew was all born Americans. Foreman was Hispanic, but third generation.
He was not found of illegals either.
Didn’t know that. That’s messed up!
That figure of $45 per hr is absurd. Perhaps $45 adjusted for inflation, but even that seems very high.
“That figure of $45 per hr is absurd. Perhaps $45 adjusted for inflation, but even that seems very high.”
The $45 is roughly what it was costing for bricklayers when I grew up...it probably is real, especially in CA.
“Ive had a few houses built and never has the cost of labor gone down.”
Probably because of what’s being built these days. 40 years ago, houses required MUCH LESS labor than today, because they were smaller and didn’t have nearly the amount of fancy crap that they do now...such as wood/tile flooring (just one example).
As to Illegals, I actually did support them decades ago when they were busting up the unions (who I still despise more than even Illegals)...but that was only because it never occurred to me that they’d have kids and repopulate the country. So my bad, back then.
So that $45 is for the master carpenter who runs the job, with helpers getting $25, which is what I think has been reduced to $11.
Which has been summarized as: "Socialize the losses, privatize the gains."
