Jeff Flake: Trump needs a Republican opponent in 2020
NY Post ^ | March 11, 2018 | 2:14pm | Marisa Schultz

WASHINGTON – President Trump should have a conservative challenger in 2020 who believes in free trade, limited government and economic freedom, said outgoing Republican Sen. Jeff Flake.

“I do,” Flake of Arizona responded Sunday when asked if Trump needs an opponent from the right.

“It would be a tough go in a Republican primary. The Republican Party is the Trump party right now. But that’s not to say it will stay that way, ” he said.

Flake, a frequent Trump critic, is retiring from the Senate because he said his traditional conservative views and temperament aren’t accepted in the age of Trump.

“I couldn’t be reelected in my party right now,” Flake told NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Trump has already announced his 2020 slogan – “Keep America Great!” – in a wide-ranging speech in Saturday in Pennsylvania where he also bashed the media, touted new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and suggested imposing the death penalty on drug dealers.

“We should never normalize this kind of behavior, particularly from the president of the United States,” Flake said. “So I think it does real damage long term to the political culture. It really does.”

Flake this week is traveling to New Hampshire, the first presidential primary state, which stoked speculation of a possible presidential bid against Trump.

Jeb would be the perfect foil for Trump in the 2020 primaries.

I miss the guy. Always smiling like a goofus and doing nerdy things. Remember when he used to carry those turtles in his pocket and hand them out? Remember when he struggled to put that hoodie on? I liked how at the debates, his podium kept moving further and further to the edge of the stage.

He was a barrel of laughs on the campaign trail and provided much comic relief.

I say bring back Jeb!

This time around, I think Jeb can do it!

““I couldn’t be reelected in my party right now,” Flake told NBC’s “Meet the Press.””

First thing he got right in all his years in politics.

“So, basically, he’s Kasich ...with table manners”

Just not with the personality.

You can bet that he has plenty of backers, the old money-talks type (cough)CoC(cough).

If it is not him then Kasich or such.

The NeverTrumper do nothing CONservatives like Flake are trying to make this whole thing about ideology when they’ve done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to promote conservatism. Donald Trump may be a non-ideologue in his politics, but he’s done more to push and get a conservative agenda implemented in DC than all the Repukes there combined! I hope Flake runs so his dumb ass can be humiliated. He’ll finish dead last in any primary he runs in, well behind undecideds and write-in votes!

“Not smart enough to realize just how out of step he is with real America.”

Nor smart enough to see how out if step he is with his perception of himself. He seems to think he is conservative.

In February 2000, I was on vacation and was watching the Republican Iowa debate in the resort clubhouse. The other person watching was Jeff Flake. He was a big George W. Bush backer, even though there were good conservatives like Pat Robertson and Gary Bauer in the race.

Flake is worried about the damage Trump is inflicing upon the country? ROFLMAO!

And a guy with traditional conservative values should be easily re-elected in AZ.

If he couldn’t win there, where in America could he win? Plus, he has an 18% approval rating back home.

By all means Jeff, run! Do run!

Maybe someone in President trump’s inner circle has quietly dropped a few hints about what is known that the “retirers” would prefer be kept quiet. So they leave rather than having their swampiness exposed during the next election cycle. Maybe...

A friend of mine says that Flake is leaving because the Koch brothers and other big donors were paying both democrats and republicans to keep immigration very high. And now it looks like Democrats are the only party willing to do that. So those big donors are either keeping their money or sending it to democrats.

Linda Graham can always step up again.
This time Linda, don’t get out before the SC primary.
I want to see you embarrassed in your home state primary.
Maybe u will get 2% of the vote.

Flake is an insane mormon cultist acting on orders from Bishop Romney.

These people believe in Kolob for Christs sake.

In a sane country this bastard would be locked up in a mental institution.

His “traditional conservative views” sound a lot like liberal ideas to me.
