Coffee Shop in Oakland Refuses to Serve Police Officers
NBC Bay Area ^ | Mar 8, 2018 | Sergio Quintana

A controversy is brewing at a coffee shop in Oakland, where police officer are not welcome.

The business, called Hasta Muerte Coffee, will not serve officers in uniform and turned away an officer a few weeks ago. The shop is an employee-owned co-op.

Workers at Hasta Muerte did not respond to requests for comment on the policy to refuse service to police officers.

But on the shop’s Instagram account, there's a photo posted with text that reads in Spanish: "Talk to your neighbors, not the police." The post continues about an exchange with a uniformed police officer on Feb. 16, and very clearly it states: "We have a policy of asking police to leave for the physical and emotional safety of our customers and ourselves."

The Oakland Police Officers Association sent the shop a letter, asking to open a dialogue about its policy.

The sergeant who was turned away from the shop a few weeks ago said he was surprised but walked out without incident and without any coffee. He said he’s looking forward to talking with the shop owners to build a better relationship with them and the rest of the community.

Hasta Muerte, which means "until death," in Spanish, is located in Oakland's Fruitvale district.

Look, if I believe that a Christian baker can refuse to make a wedding cake for a gay wedding, and I do, then a coffee shop can refuse service to anyone that they choose also. Being a cop isn’t a race, gender, or religion. It’s a job, not a “class” so move on and don’t do business with them. Easy peezy.

If you can force a baker out of business because they discriminated against an LBGT couple you now have precedence on discriminating against about anything you can imagine. I say sue the coffee shop and put them out of business just like the baker.

What if a couple of gay cops walks in? Would they have to serve them? How can they deny service to anyone? Yet if a gay couple wants a wedding cake they have to be served???

I don’t get it...

Harassment by government officials should be strongly discouraged.

Even this cop seems like a beta male, he wants to talk and dialogue with someone that refused to serve him? And the police union too? What happened to, I look forward to them meeting my attorney with a proposed large settlement for discrimination?

So is this a black-owned or latino-owned business. If the latter, so much for the myth that being a sanctuary city will improve cooperation between the “community” and the police. If the former, what’s new it’s Oakland.

“Hasta” and “Hasten” share the same old French root of ‘haste’ which means quick or speedy.

“Hasta la vista” then translates as ‘see you soon’.

Which it does.

No, 2 wrongs don’t make a right. It wasn’t right to force the baker, and it isn’t right to force the coffee shop. Repeat after me, “It’s a free country.” A favorite saying from my childhood that has unfortunately been replaced by the liberal mantra, “there ought to be a law.” Let’s bring freedom of association back. For everyone.

The police should announce that they will serve and protect this business should they get robbed or shot up, but that they will obey all legal speed limits and traffic lights in the event of a call from this shop.

Safety first, after all, don't want any traffic accidents on their way to the scene of the crime. Also, officers on site should follow the example of the Parkland Police Department, and wait safely offsite until any danger is past.

They probably don’t even know what melanin is.
Nice of them to advertise that there won’t be any cops nearby.

As mentioned here on FR, White Rose Coffeehouse in Lynn MA proudly said they would not participate in the Coffee With a Cop program because the manager thinks they are racists and murderers. She did not welcome police in. The shop’s owner, mother of the manager, tried to do damage control and did invite cops in but they didn’t show up.Neither did regular customers. While a few may have agreed with the policy, most were outraged. The shop soon went out of business.

Engaging in public commerce means serving the public. I think the counter at Walgreens debate is over.
