Congress is preparing assail China for protectionist policies, like a 105.4% tariff on US poultry. But anyone who thinks America is a perfect practitioner of free trade needs to wake up.

I guess my point is that Tariffs are not evil, other countries will always use them and currency manipulation to take advantage of us. We have been in a trade war for decades, but we didn’t fight back, we just laid there taking a beating.
The shale revolution and abundant natural gas allow for direct reduction iron production that is probably more economical than blast furnace production.
Exactly.
Big Steel didn’t accept advancements until they were flogged by superior foreign technology. By the time they acknowleged it, it was too late. Allentown.
We can hope they pull their heads out and embrace advancments in the industry. If it’s locally owned, I see some promise.
Wow. Finally got time to watch the vid. Amazing, thank you.

LDA i hear is a very good light double action.
I have a stainless P14-45 Limited.
DRI produces less pure iron that must then be further refined in whatever furnace is used to convert it to steel, which is a solved problem but one that introduces some complexity. Blast furnaces produce a more pure iron product.
Using tariffs to retaliate against those set by other countries is only part of the equation. The fact is that producers in the US are subject to overhead costs that simply don't exist in much of the developing world (environmental and safety regulations, etc). Imposing tariffs simply levels the playing field and makes for fair trade.
Free trade zealots claim that Trump's steel tariff will make cars unaffordable to the average American. We have tariffs in place on many of our agricultural products, and our produce and meat is cheaper than those of most other high-income nations.
No argument there. I don’t think it’s an ‘either/or’... but the retaliatory aspect should be automatic, predictable and unvarying - your highest tariff = our highest tariff, be it 1 or 10 thousand things. The equalization of societal variables and all of the concomitant considerations should be the task of the executive and the legislative.
Glad it gave you some insight, There are all kinds of documentary’s on the valley.
