Turkey Threatens to Invade Greece and Seize Aegean Islands

Officials in Turkey’s ruling party threatened this week to invade Greece to take control of disputed islands in the Aegean Sea. As Hurriyet Daily News tells it, the situation began shifting from long-simmering back-burner grievances to a bubbling pot of war threats in 2016, when Ozturk Yilmaz assumed the deputy chairmanship of Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP).

Hurriyet describes Yilmaz as a fire-breathing populist-nationalist who “was not exactly among the brightest” of Turkish politicians. He went looking for a soft spot in Erdogan’s party he could hit with a barrage of populist rhetoric and decided to needle the Justice and Development Party (AKP) for its soft stance on reclaiming the Aegean islands from Greece.

Turkey controlled the islands until losing them to Italy in the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, which formally concluded World War 1. The war saw the death of several empires, prominently including the Ottoman Empire of Turkey. Turkey lost its Aegean possessions but got to keep Turkish Kurdistan. Current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AKP party do not like the first half of that deal, and the Kurdish separatists of the PKK party do not like the other.

Can’t wait to see how Merkel and Juncker respond to an armed attack on a member of the EU and NATO by Turkey ... Macron, of course, will do whatever Merkel tells him to do.

I think the Ottoman Empire occupied the islands for something like 400 years before the dissolution of the Empire after WWI

They won’t care, it would be a saracen invasion. They love saracens more than their own people and culture.

Greece and Turkey are both in NATO. Hence they are required to come to the other’s defense if attacked. So Turkey has to defend Greece against a Turkish invasion.

Milo Minderbinder would be proud. And everyone gets a share.

Erdogan’s military got gutted after the coup.
He thinks he’s the next Sultan. He’s been playing around in Syria for years but needs Russian approval before he does anything.

Greece could be a neat little experiment for him to toy with.

He’s got bigger problems south in Israel though. His entire nation would be decimated in less than 8 hours if he played with them.

This is gesture is nothing but hot air I suspect.

Erdogan is getting too big for his britches. He needs a good clout alongside the head.

Macron will drop his drawers and let the Turks screw him up the wazoo.

Merkel is probably providing the Turks with weapons and intel, being for the fact of her lust for Musloid boy flesh.

Seize Turkey, and restore Orthodox Christian rule in Constantinople

That’s a worthy goal.

Considering the Greeks once threatened to sue Germany for WW2 reparations, you might be right about Merkel.

However Macron may be falling more under the influence of Trump these days than Erdogan.

I was thinking, maybe just sell them to Turkey?

No, and no Leonidas at the hot gates of Thermopylae, either. You know, the “Molon Labe” guy?

Anyway, Erdogan has already threatened to engulf Europe with millions of unemployed Turkish men. These islands would be a trifle for him.

They’ve already occupied Greece. For 400 years. They never give up their goal - occupy the entire world and have everyone bowing on the floor under someone’s a$$ and yelling allaku akhbar.

"I think the Ottoman Empire occupied the islands for something like 400 years before the dissolution of the Empire after WWI"

And most (perhaps all) were originally settled by the ancestors of Greeks. [1][2].

So back and forth they've gone over the centuries.

If Russia invades Turkey from the rear, will Greece help?

“Turkey controlled the islands until losing them to Italy in the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, which formally concluded World War 1.”

Turkey also lost the remainder of the Ottoman Empire at the time. All sorts of new countries were created out of it. Does turkey want to reclaim its former caliphate? Does Erdogan want to be the head of a new caliphate?

Inquiring minds want to know.
