Look for a quid pro quo from some government or uniparty entity. My bet is SimpliSafe would not have done this without one. Follow the money.

My bet is they simply caved to Masshole social pressure. I have no inside info, other than living in Taxachusetts.

Being Hahvard MBA's, I'd have expected them to have the intelligence to relocate to a more favorable venue before starting their business venture.

But hey! Relocating is work. Otherwise, I'd be somewhere else. But, I'm lazy!

Is SimpliSafe private or public? If the former, fewer people to have worry about justifying this to. But I don’t think for one minute that any company is doing this gratis.

Big questions: Is offering/giving these companies preferential treatment/contracts in return for the boycott an illegal act? And if so, criminal, civil, both?

Yeah, that's probably exactly it. I've sat through meetings with (boston area university based ) startups making pitches to global companies tossing in random Trump jibes. The people around Cambridge _hate loathe and fear_ Trump and almost anything connected with evil republicans. Their world view can't even grasp that they would lose customers over this.
