In my city, SWAT officers are trained for combat situations. Most of them are ex military, where they had more training and often actual combat experience. Most of the ordinary officers aren’t trained to the same level.
I don’t know if we have “school resource officers”. I expect SROs are mostly trained in diversity and sensitivity.
Unless this officer in Florida had real training for combat situations (which is the responsibility of his boss, the Sheriff), it’s not reasonable to expect him to run into an unknown shooter situation by himself. We HOPE a policeman would run in, but we have no right to EXPECT it will happen every time.
I think the sheriff should show us the fellow’s training record, and his standing orders for active shooter situations. Until then, I’ll put most of the blame for the officer’s inaction on the sheriff, who is probably covering his own butt at this point.
I won’t criticize the officer from the safety of my armchair unless I see evidence that his actions were well short of what he was trained to do.
What were the football coach and the JROTC kid trained to do?
