Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) on Wednesday said he intends to introduce legislation next week to ban assault weapons.
Ryan Schachter, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School whose brother was killed in last weeks shooting there, asked Deutch during a CNN town hall event what he would do to ensure he will be safe at school.
Were going to introduce legislation to make sure that assault weapons are illegal in every part of this country, Deutch said, prompting applause from the audience. Deutch was referring to legislation from Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) that has dozens of Democratic cosponsors.
He said he supports local law enforcement and school staff to provide as much security and comfort as needed to make sure students feel safe.
"But beyond that, the best way for us to show that is to take action in Washington, in Tallahassee, to get these weapons of war off of our streets," Deutch said.
Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., have spoken out in recent days after a gunman opened fire in their school on Feb. 14. The students have called on lawmakers to enact legislation that would curb gun violence and prevent school shootings.
Some have called for a ban on assault weapons after an AR-15 was used in last week's shooting and several previous mass shootings.
Other lawmakers have proposed raising the minimum age requirement to purchase certain firearms. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) expressed support Wednesday for such a proposal.
The White House hosted a listening session earlier Wednesday to gather feedback from parents, students and family members with a connection to past school shootings, including survivors of the Florida shooting.
This is good , let the Red State Dims that are up for re-election squirm on this ... the Dims are going to make sure our side finally gets energized for the upcoming election ...
Hey Dem...
F you!
Guess they haven’t learned from that ass-whooping in 1994.
Donnelly is already under water here in Indiana
This whole gun debate just tied bricks around his ankles
If our Military used Civilian Semi-Automatic AR-15 Rifles, the Enemy would defeat them with their real “Weapons of War”.
What a friggin ignorant Douche this DemoncRat is, but I repeat myself.
Actually he isn’t Ignorant, he knows full well that an AR-15 is not an Military Assault Weapon, but it feeds the Ignorant Douche Bags that Vote him into Office.
Of course the Second Amendment was meant to insure the Populace actually had “Weapons of War” to protect themselves from a Tyrannical Government, but why confuse these Morons with Facts.
Any fool who “assaults” the enemy in a war with an AR 15, unless it has been changed to fire “automatically”, is dead meat. It was not meant as an assault weapon in the traditional sense that an M16 of AK 47 were unless it was modified.
That’s like me charging up Chau Phu Mountain in south Vietnam with a .22 cal rifle. The only difference is that the AR 15 can have a 30 shot clip. The .22 can only hold up to 15 Long Rounds at best.
It is a question of whether the problem is the AR 15 and the way it is designed NOW, whether it is the insane person who is using it and how did they get it, or any combination thereof.
Why did the mother of the Sandy Hook school murderer give her mentally ill son a rifle and/or other guns?
Who was watching the “watcher”?
Next...
make them spell out definition of assault weapon in legislation -
Would banning Oldsmobilles have prevented TED KENNEDY from filling a girl in one?
Sounds like a Nazi blitzkrieg coming.
Good. That guy only won because Mourdock got stuck on that tricky rape/abortion question.
Any effort to raise the age over 18 for anything is wrong, if you can join the military, you can vote, you can sign a contract, you are an adult and should be treated as such.
Good point, what is an assault weapon. I know from California is definition, my sons Ruger 1022 with an adjustable stock now qualifies as an assault weapon
No. Come and get them - YOU, not your hired stooges, chickenshiite.
Assault weapons legislation in the United States refers to bills and laws (active, expired, proposed or failed) that define and restrict or make illegal the manufacture, transfer, and possession of assault weapons. How these firearms are defined and regulated varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In general, there is no clear definition of an "assault weapon".[1] Nonetheless, "assault weapons" are often considered to be semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine, as first defined in a 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB)."
2017
WashingtonSenator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and a number of her colleagues today introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2017, a bill to ban the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
2015
Assault weapons were banned federally under the Bill Clinton administration, from 1994 to 2004, but have been legal federally ever since. (Although several states do ban the weapons.) H.R. 4269, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2015, was introduced by Rep. David Cicilline (R-RI1) last December about two weeks after the San Bernardino massacre. The bill would reinstate the federal ban from the 1990s.
2013
The Assault Weapons Ban of 2013 (AWB 2013) was a bill introduced in the 113th United States Congress as S. 150 by Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, on January 24, 2013, one month after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. It was defeated in the Senate on April 17, 2013 by a vote of 40 to 60.
and on and on and on
Yes, there is a big difference between a clip and a magazine...anyone familiar with firearms knows the difference.
I guess you're also not too familiar with the Ruger 10/22...I have a couple of 25-rounders for mine, and they make 50 and 110 round drums for it.
Also, the Brits did just fine with their semi-auto only L1A1 SLR. Granted, in the Falklands, many Tommies ditched their L1A1s and picked up surrendered Argentine select fire FALs, but keep in mind, that came only after the battles, which the Brits won with their semi-auto L1A1s. So yes, you can successfully assault an objective with semi-auto rifles.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Well, okay. It will get voted down, and then people will make their choices in the next election. Now due to the political pendulum and motivated resistance, people could support keeping these weapons legal and still vote Dem, though.
Deutch bag.
