Broward County sheriff's deputies will now carry AR-15 rifles while on school campuses following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, last week, Sheriff Scott Israel announced today.
The new policy was implemented Wednesday morning. In lieu of gun lockers, the only time deputies will not be "slinging a rifle" is when the firearm is locked in police vehicles, Israel said.
The rifles will not be fully automatic and will only be handled by deputies who are "trained and qualified" to operate them, Israel said.

A very good decision.
Told my two girls that when they were teens....Told them keep their heads on a swivel too. Once they got into their mid 20's it all sunk in........
“Debbie Wasserman Shultz will pull the plug on this or Bloomberg “
The sheriff is elected by the people. How does Debbie or Bloomberg “pull the plug?”
We have an elected, pro-2nd amendment, Constitutional sheriff in my county. I’d be interested in hearing how he can be “pulled by the plug.”
Please respond. I need a good laugh.
There is the rub...
Might have to have a hunt here soon.....I'm in NE OK.
You know the boat, Everyone knows everyones job

If one or two+ people are intent, they could shoot their way right through an entry point like that. They’d have the element of surprise. Game over.
How big is that school?
I believe the one security guard stood in front of the students and was shot and killed.
I have the friend who is mayor of a small town with about the same population as the school. His police department has 18 officers. The school had two.
Another fail.
God willing, mine will go that route, too.
Unfortunately, right now she's not big enough to rack the slide on a G43 without breaking her stance.
36 rds of Hornaday XTP 9mm Makarov should do the trick without blowing the cover
I get that. My hope is the AR on any presently armed deputies can be relaxed to simple concealed carry, on deputies and volunteer coaches and teachers, trained in concert with community police.
But, it is dawning on me that our Godless society is collapsing and we are now citizens on defense, or should be, just about everywhere. No?
In a school?
Ever wonder why they make minimum wage?
They are fodder
Gotta keep em guessing
In a perfect world always a rifle ....... but as a peacetime personal security detail aka kindergarten kop ....low profile I’d rather have a Sig 226 of 147gr frangables and a Glock 43 ankle rig backup.
I can “safely” fire down the hallway ceiling to disorient and confuse the active shooter and hopefully he isn’t a vet with a couple of tours as a door kicker and used to fright’n flight urges. Cropdusting the hallway per se.
Yes, getting to be an old man, lots of sudden stops, dressed casual, seasoned citizen who’s carry gear does not print. I’d love to be on a high vantage point with a precision long range rifle and kneecap anyone walking from the parking lot with anything bigger that a violin case (my SBR PDW).... to old to believe the racket ball carry case. Stop the threat before the even get to the door.
Add a few random places where you can see many approaches, “L” shaped intersecting halls, mirrors, security cameras only add to “mitigating” a slaughter.
Bring the fight fast and loud .....distract , disorient , confuse, scare the active shooter. Hell even put custom surround sound speakers playing machineguns and shotguns firing with sirens as the “lockdown” warning .......
Its not perfect .....just part of a layered defense in depth with a very fast response time.
Understand your valid concerns ....
One of mine was just in Germany. As she was boarding the plane I texted her a reminder that she and her friends were to keep on the look out for groups of muslim men, avoid them at all cost and to fight mercilessly if necessary.
The other lives a block from the riot in Charlottesville. I told her not to go home that night. She already had made plans not to. She went home from work, grabbed a change of clothes and her pistol and lit out.
Always keep your head on a swivel.
Damn old sore neck...
