I had to shake my head concerning the “school shootings in Australia” comment. It (Port Arthur in 1996) was not a school shooting, but a mass public one and that there had been only one or a couple of such incidents of that sort beforehand. The Port Arthur shooting was perpetrated by an individual long known to his family and others as barely mentally competent and functional and certainly should not have been given a licence to legally buy firearms as he was in Tasmania.
Firearms prohibitionists also will not bother telling you that nearby New Zealand did not enact similar very strict regulations and did not suffer any mass public shootings during the same time frame (none since a February 1997 in which six were murdered with a shotgun).
