Seems to me what matters is not the proficiency (above some minimum, most important is not accuracy but knowing when NOT to pull the trigger) but just the publicized fact that the school is NOT a gun free zone. Even a school shooter who plans on suicide at the end is not going to want to be eternally humiliated by being cut short be returning fire.
It reminds me of sailing. When I first learned to sail I thought I knew what I was doing so I started competing in races. That is a quick way to discover how little you really know. Competition is good not so much in that it humiliates you but it brings you into contact with people who really DO know what they are doing and you can identify just who it is you should be learning from. Shooting is like that and good competitors are generally pretty gracious with good advice.
