Trump open to tougher gun background checks after Florida rampage
The New York Post ^ | 02/19/18 | Mark Moore

The White House signaled that President Trump would be open to bolstering gun background checks in the wake of a mass shooting at a Florida high school last week that rekindled the national debate about gun control.

The president spoke on Friday to Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn about a bill the Texas Republican introduced with Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) that would “improve federal compliance with criminal background check legislation,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement on Monday.

“While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the president is supportive of efforts to improve the federal background check system,” she said.

Cornyn and Murphy were among a bipartisan group of lawmakers who supported the background check bill introduced in November after a church shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, that left 26 people dead.

It’s the first indication that Trump would back a measure to bolster background checks.

In the days after 17 people were gunned down at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Fla., last Wednesday, Trump blamed mental illness and called on “neighbors and classmates” to report erratic behavior.

The White House also said Trump will host a “listening session” this Wednesday with high school students and teachers, but didn’t confirm that Parkland teens will be part of the discussion.

A group of students who survived the rampage also announced that they will hold a “March for Our Lives” rally in Washington, D.C., on March 24 to highlight the need for gun control.

Trump spent the three-day Presidents Day weekend at his resort in Mar-a-Lago, which is about 40 miles north of the school shooting site, and surveyed members about gun control laws, The Washington Post reported.

Nikolas Cruz had no prior criminal record and he cleared background checks.

See Laz's flow chart above...

Start a review of every county’s school system security and protocol for dangerous situations. I have a feeling that Broward County isn’t the only one lacking, that could easily afford to upgrade to something that doesn’t invite a tragedy that those with bated breath are always waiting for.

Agree. We should stop glamorizing guns and gun battles in video games, movies and TV. Stop that and see if anyone claims first amendment rights. Then start talking about gun control. I do think greater background checks and maybe limitations on assault rifles would not be a bad idea.

If you take prescription drugs behavioral issues or for depression then you should not be able to purchase firearm. Also, hold drug companies accountable.

How about 25 being the minimum age to purchase, and/or own, a gun. Along with that, a gun safety certification and a required number of hours in training.

Exceptions, of course, would be made for the military, but then, the military does the extensive training and safety requirements.

Twenty-five supposed to be the magic age when young adults finally gain the full ability to foresee the results of their actions, and the consequences of stupid decisions.

That’s five extra years of maturity, societal rules, and knowledge.

Let’s stop pushing societal control to younger and younger people. Everything from firearms to sex is being pushed younger and younger, when it should be going the other way.

And while we’re at it...twenty-five should be the minimum voting age too...same reasons.

Same thing with immigration.
We don’t need new laws when they refuse to use the ones we have.

My point is still valid - same with the TX mass murderer.

Apparently, the lapses in the background check system were not fixed.

We don’t need a new law; we need to better enforce the laws we already have on the books.

A background check is useless if the subject’s medical records are confidential under Federal law.

See Laz's flow chart above.

How could a government that monitors every form of electronic communication accidentally miss all those red flags?

Could it be deliberate, hmmmm?

If the shooter (I will not mention his name) had shouted "Allahu akbar" while killing the students, Hillary! supporters would have been saying "Don't judge a whole community because of one crazed individual".

Since the shooter did not shout "Allahu akbar", Hillary! supporters are saying "Blame the whole community for the actions of one crazed individual".

What’s with tougher background checks....they don’t do anything with the ones they have.

~!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!~!~!~!~!~!~

Assault rifles were greatly limited in 1986.
Fully automatic weapons are tightly regulated and very expensive. No one is using them in crimes.

More gun control will do nothing to solve this problem.

Stop Gun Free Zones; allow CCW permit holders to carry to include teachers who are willing.

A good guy with a gun is the only true fix.

Then follow laws on those being treated for mental heath to be listed by law enforcement in NICS instant check.

Things that need to change to facilitate said background checks

1) Document all bad behavior. Start laying mischief charges. For the little angels from ages 8 to 18. Have some sort of record to review
2) Bury the PC. Support teachers and police and remove the fear and backlash of confronting the hispanics and Trayvons.
3) Repeal all the liberal nonsense of putting medicated mental cases in our neighbourhoods. Lock up the criminally insane and work to improve the drugs to control the violent impulses.

The NICS system is good but if the government isn’t keeping their records up to date, they must do better.

The school district DELIBERATELY withheld any information from the local LEOs.

The LEOs made the DELIBERATE decision to do NOTHING on any of the 39 house calls they made.

The FBI NEGLIGENTLY failed to give local law enforcement a heads up. They couldn't find anything on someone posting that they were going to shoot up a school on an open forum under his own name? Is this abject incompetence, neglect or deliberate?

what is wrong with tougher background checks?

Define "tougher".

You're already checked for felonies, drug use, dishonorable discharge, etc, etc.

Have you ever filled out a form 4473?
