Kind of like this guy, eh?Isn’t it amazing how good a selection Reiner was for the Meathead character? He didn’t have to act—all he had to do was be himself.
Kind of like this guy, eh? Unfortunately they wanted Meathead to be the one people in the audience identified with and cheered for but not only was the character wrong on every issue, Reiner himself portrayed him as an angry, condescending and arrogant jerk. So everybody disliked him. Not what they were going for.
Always rooted for Archie. He may have had outdated, bigoted views but at least he was somewhat lovable. And funny. Meathead was just a self righteous jerk.

Whats funny is that his character was supposed to be the modern voice of reason and progress to bigoted, living in the past Archie. Instead, most every viewer loved Archie and thought Meathead was a dumb hippie communist.
If you ever heard his dad really be open about his views, socially and politically, you would know that the apple didn't fall far from the tree. The only difference is Carl was more polished about it.
