Florida shooting: Teachers 'were warned' about Nikolas Cruz
BBC ^ | 2-15-18

Teachers were warned in advance about the teenager who allegedly carried out a mass shooting at his former school in Florida, US media are reporting.

Nikolas Cruz has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder following the deadliest shooting at a US school since 2012.

A teacher said Mr Cruz was not allowed on campus with a backpack.

Seventeen people were killed in the attack and many more injured. Several people are in a critical condition. Mr Cruz, 19, apparently left the scene of the shooting by blending in with fleeing students, but was arrested several miles away and is now in police custody. What was the warning?

Maths teacher Jim Gard told the Miami Herald that school authorities had emailed teachers about Mr Cruz's behaviour.

"We were told last year that he wasn't allowed on campus with a backpack on him," Mr Gard told the Miami Herald. "There were problems with him last year threatening students, and I guess he was asked to leave campus."

He was adopted. Both adoptive parents are deceased. His adoptive farther died years ago and his adoptive mother died 6 months ago. He was living at a friends house.

...We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him...

That says just about it all about this psychopath.

I heard that the shooter hit the fire alarm before he started shooting. If this is true, it’s a new and pretty smart tactic. You get everyone out of the school in standing groups, clear of any immediate cover, and then you mow them down.

The football coach who died sheltering students with his body was also the school security guard. I've read Cruz wasn't detained for 2 hours. Liberals would tell you it's a good thing that security guard, who was at the initial point of contact and sacrificed his life, wasn't armed. Not good for him or anyone shot after his confrontation.

What should have been done? He was already expelled from the school.

Put the national spot light back on the FBI.

They blew it and these kids died.

Did the FBI ignore this kid on purpose?

They were keen to interview the whistle blower twice. odd?

His mother died of pneumonia on Nov. 1 neighbors, friends and family members said, according to the Sun Sentinel. Cruz and her husband, who died of a heart attack several years ago, adopted Nikolas and his biological brother, Zachary, after the couple moved from Long Island in New York to Broward County.

Your basic G man did show up. My guess is that the commie admins at the school didn’t do theirs, so no dots where connected. Would be nice to know the timeline.

The FBI was too busy manufacturing evidence of Trump/Russia collusion to investigate a real domestic terrorist threat.

This guy was on the radar but there is nobody watching the screen.

Yes I have - and I posted an answer to my own question about the status of his parents. Why do you ask?

But, since the teachers were not armed and since teachers are no longer allowed to pick up delinquent drop-out former students by the scruffs of their necks and physically remove them from school property, what were the teachers supposed to do?

Personally I think teachers should be able to be armed if they so desire and are willing to accept the responsibility of confronting an intruder. Beyond that, my understanding in virtually all states they're required to report a student who is a danger to self in others to the authorities. Certainly the administrators should have reported him. "Fighting" is just another name for assault, and clearly they considered him a threat. What would the authorities do, hopefully advocate for a mental health commitment hearing. If committed, he would have been unable to purchase a firearm legally. All the laws we have covering these situations, they all failed.

Federal and state laws make it almost impossible to keep a student out of school. I know of a case where a student threatened to kill a teacher at one school and was merely transferred to another school without alerting teachers in the other school.

Some districts have detention schools, but districts have to jump through hoops to have students placed in them.

This all comes under the concept of preventing any and all discrimination. Discrimination is, due to extremely punitive laws, the fire breathing dragon that all school districts have to contend with at every level.

Horrible crimes like this require calm, deliberation.

Not if your concern is fundraising. Deliberation never raised a penny or won a vote.

Good point. It reminds me of another interesting piece of information: There are over 100,000 public schools in the US. And the average attendance is around 500-600, roughly. This gives well over 5 million students, and yet only a few are affected by this kind of violence.

i.e. statistically, it’s not an issue until it actually happens to your child or one of your children’s’ friends, which is almost as likely as winning the lotto.

I see it as a purely emotional issue and not justified as a national story. It’s certainly not something the FedGov should be dealing with. It is a local issue.

My cousin’s son went to MSD until they moved back to New Jersey earlier this year. When he heard about the shooting, he told her exactly who did it, literally within a minute. If a kid who used to go to that go school and now lives a thousand miles away could finger this kid, why was nothing done?

So are you promoting jailing someone who has not harmed anyone yet? I'm sure the next Des administration will LOVE that rule, especially since they enjoy corrupting the FBI and DOJ. How many Conservatives do you think they could fit in the prisons and camps?

What exactly do you suggest be "done"?

This is on law enforcement with some on the school district as well (added security could have helped). Near as I can tell from afar, all the signs were there.

I agree, though I'd put the school first. Articles seem to indicate the sheriff knew nothing about this kid, which likely means the school administration never contacted them.

I have read that Nikolas and his brother were adopted at a young age in Long Island. Apparently he was a troubled child from the get-go, which is often the case with some adopted children because of the irresponsible people who create them in the first place. If the story I read is correct, his father died about ten years ago and his mother had problems handling Nikolas, unsurprisingly. She died last year and the angry, troubled 18 year old moved in with a “friend’s” family and worked at the dollar store.
