President Trump endorsed a 25-cent gas tax hike to pay for infrastructure at a White House meeting this morning with senior administration officials and members of Congress from both parties, according to two sources with direct knowledge. Trump also said he was open to other ways to pay for infrastructure, according to a source with direct knowledge.
Reality check: Trumps gas tax idea appears dead on arrival. Republicans arent about to hike taxes for the Trump voters driving their pickup trucks to work every day. Its a regressive tax and in Republicans minds would undo some of working and middle class tax cuts they just passed.

If the feds weren’t spending 70% of their outlays on charity, we’d have money for infrastructure.
Axios is BS. Period.
I too support regressive taxes.
Trump’s plan spends $20B dollars a year in federal money. I don’t believe there is a need to raise the federal gas tax.
I find it hard to believe Trump supports more federal gasoline taxes. Hopefully this “idea” goes nowhere.
Terrific idea.
They don’t use the gas tax money we pay now exclusively on roads, but some folks think, it’s a great idea to raise gas taxes.
“Fool me once, and by golly I’ll sign right up to let you do kit again!” Ah not thanks.
We already pay high taxes on gasoline.
The very last thing you do is raise any taxes after coming out of a severe recession. THE VERY LAST THING.
They have lots of programs/departments that should be eliminated and that money distributed to offset the costs of rebuilding bridges and roads.
BTW, what the hell? Rebuild airports and hospitals? Eff that. Those should be rebuilt at the costs of the areas they serve as well as the airlines that use them, in the case of airports.
Tap into the $ billions that are crossing the border going south every year.
*************
I don’t know the details of the process but there is a lot of
money going south each payday. Go to some of the stores that
do wire transfers on a Thur/Fri afternoon and see the activity.
If the fiscally irresponsible government would quit wasting and losing our tax dollars, not to mention billions in foreign aid and handouts to illegal immigrants, wed have more than enough for infrastructure.
The same could be said of every penny of revenue from any source.
And for borrowed money too.
Ping for wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I don’t want to pay the tax but it is the right way to build roads and bridges.
“The existing fuel tax isnt used for infrastructure. It goes into the General Fund and pissed away. If you want to feed the swamp, increase fuel taxes.”
The fuel tax is no more likely to be misspent than any other tax, from income, to estate to Social Security taxes.
The key is that it is a regressive tax and therefore effects everyone equally.
And, as far as taxes go, that’s as good as it gets.
Huge budgets. More taxes. Tax cuts for illegals. Why do we need Democrats when Trump & Congress do their jobs?
Maybe $25 monthly? That hardly destroys the tax savings.
“I dont want to pay the tax but it is the right way to build roads and bridges.”
BULL CRAP! Fake news from the teenage boy underarm deodorant news.
So....Trump is going to cut our payroll tax, brag about all the money he saved us, then take it right back in gas taxes? If Trump raises the gas tax, especially by that much, he shouldn’t even bother running in 2020.
This is from Axios, so take it with a grain of salt.
“The existing fuel tax isnt used for infrastructure. It goes into the General Fund and pissed away”
Start designating funds for the purposes for which they were originally intended, Social Security for Social Security, Gas Taxes for roads, etc. Argue the bills for earmarking with quotes from the original debates. I don’t think anyone actually argued funding for a lot of the pork being funded now.
“If Trump raises the gas tax, especially by that much, he shouldnt even bother running in 2020.”
Thinking conservatives disagree with you.
yup...my concern...
Don’t try it! If you want my vote, you’ll forget you ever thought that this was a good idea.
