Widow Of Russian Mercenary Killed In Syria: 'They Were Thrown Into Battle Like Pigs'

Yelena Matveyeva was eagerly awaiting what she hoped would be her husband's return to Russia from Syria, where he had been allegedly fighting for months as a mercenary alongside forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Spirits buoyed that he could be home in weeks, she decided to buy a new dress. While in a store in Asbest, their hometown in Russia's Sverdlovsk region, east of Moscow, she got a call from a friend.

Matveyeva said her friend asked her if she had heard anything from her husband or Igor Kosoturov, another military contractor from Asbest. "I said, 'I haven't been able to call him for three days,'" Matveyeva recounts. "Literally, in a minute he calls me back and says, 'Stasa [her husband Stanislav] and Igor are dead.'"

Jughead would drop candy such as military supplies in the area at times. I guess they thought Trump might continue that but they were wrong...

Thoroughly depressing news - and I know some people in the Russian armed forces — but thankfully in easy posts and not stationed in Syria.

So sneaky of the Kremlin to hide these death tolls behind the “mercenary” label.

Syria is a mess with no easy answers, but one thing is certain: Vladimir Putin is not to be trusted. I just don’t see how cooperation with Russia on any level in the region is possible unless Putin does a completely 180 or until there’s new leadership in the country.

Maybe a miracle will happen on March 18th elections?!

Personally I foresee one happening just not that soon.

BTW, the Russians used the hot line to ask if we were done shooting in order to recover the dead and wounded.

The dead and wounded have mostly been evac’d back to Russia.

Are we to believe the Russians didn’t have command and control here?

The mercs couldn’t have built that temp bridge over the Euphrates.

mercenary - that’s Military-speak for ‘EXPENDABLES’..............

I think in another thread they were referred to as 'contractors'.

As a mercenary (independent contractor) you can always say,

Take this job and shove it. I ain't working here no more.

Guy Fleegman: [whimpering] I changed my mind, I wanna go back.

Alexander Dane: After all the fuss you made about getting left behind?

Guy Fleegman: Yeah, but that’s when I thought I was the crewman that stays on the ship and something is up there and it kills me. But now I’m thinking I’m the guy that gets killed by some monster five minutes after we land on the planet.

Jason Nesmith: You’re not going to die on the planet, Guy.

Guy Fleegman: I’m not? Then what’s my last name?

Jason Nesmith: It’s, uh, uh — I don’t know.

Guy Fleegman: Nobody knows. You know why? Because my character isn’t important enough for a last name, because I’m gonna die five minutes in.

Gwen DeMarco: Guy, you have a last name.

Guy Fleegman: DO I??!! DO I??!! FOR ALL YOU KNOW, I’M “CREWMAN #6”! [puts his head on Gwen’s shoulder and cries] Mommy! Mommy!

Alexander Dane: [wearily] Are we there yet?

He was probably in the group of mercenaries that were on their way to do battle with the Kurds, and the Americans blew them all away, killing over a 100 of them, wounding many more. :) The Americans are working with the Kurds there in eastern Iraq.

They’re conducting a proxy war for Putin. Whether it’s in the Ukraine or Syria Putin is using contractors to prosecute war in areas he’s most interested in.

Depicted in the game “Call of Duty”. It’s a pretty rough part of the game.

Galaxy Quest. The best Star Trek movie of all and it’s just a parody of Star Trek. A Must-watch item.
