Does anyone even know what compelling U.S. interest was at stake in Lebanon back in the 1980s?
I'm too young to remember the events as they unfolded, but I do remember that the whole charade played a big part in the pursuit of a military career on my part (or a lack of such, to be more accurate).

We were UN peacekeepers, being honest brokers and keeping Israel and the PLO, which had ensconced itself in Lebanon after being forced out of Jordan, apart. When Hezbollah turned 200+ Marines into hamburger, they became our enemy. That’s not even counting their torture and murder of William F. Buckley, the local CIA station chief and Embassy employee with full diplomatic immunity and the bombing of the US Embassy in Lebanon.
