I’m old enough to remember Government Cheese.

It was actually pretty good!

Kinda a cross between mild cheddar and Velveeta.

When we came here in the early 50’s, welfare recipients got a box of staples like flour, cheese, canned goods, etc., and not a lot. There was a wonderful family across the street, elderly grandparents raising their three grandchildren of modest means. He grew vegetables, raised rabbits, chickens, etc., and they all got by. All of them picked grapes in the fields during summer holidays to get outfitted for the school year. I was friends with the kids, and my Mum & Dad and the neighbors hired the grandfather to mow their lawns. True American spirit in that family and it was so impressive.
