Thanks. Lately there seems to be a cruel streak coming out in some people in this forum that makes me cringe.

Candy bars cannot be bought with food stamps. But trust me someone has stood and argued with the grocery clerk that “Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups” are eligible because peanut butter.

Outstanding! Obviously the food stamp cards don’t work anymore because people can sell them for drugs, alcohol, etc. But it is much harder to trade food for drugs.

There are restrictions not everyone can use an EBT at participating restaurants. The restrictions vary by state. Not all states offer that option. Federal law allows states to let people who are homeless, disabled or,elderly to use EBT at restaurants. States don’t have to expand the program but they may provided those restrictions are met.

A cooking and budgeting course should be required for food stamp recipients.

After how ever many required classes, these folks should be required to present their budget, what groceries they’ve purchased and prepare a meal with the cost of the meal presented, as well.

Heck, middle schoolers can take these classes, so food stamp recipients should be required to pass the above ‘means’ tests every year they need to renew assistance.

>>>Stupid people on FR keep confusing SNAP with welfare programs like TANF<<<

Yep, just a bunch of Stoopid (SIC on purpose) Irredeemable Deplorables on FR who believe that (as my Late Mother always said) you help People who CAN’T help themselves, not People who WON’T Help themselves.

BTW, don’t confuse Ignorance with Stupidity. You may end up offending some People. #;^)

Shelf-life is not an issue if you are being provided a subsidy. There is no incentive to stock up on things that are on sale. Though, generally, I agree with the things you wrote - if you are buying food with your own money. People on food stamps are not doing that.

My reasoning, for example, not allowing the bread aisle for food stamps is a bit more subtle.

Rather having a micromanaged list of allowed and disallowed things - sliced bread yes, hostess cup-cakes no - Canned green Geens yes, Spaghetti-O’s,no - I want to narrow the types of items to reduce abuse down and, in some none violent measure force the fat, overweight women, I see making awful food choices for them and their families and paying for those poor choices with their SNAP card to become used to thinking about buying better foods. So yes, I am advocating some social engineering. But, unlike the demondogs, I am not forcing them to make the choice. They have the freedom to purchase other things with their own cash or, if they want, leave the program.

Notice, my list would allow many luxury items like a beef steak, lamb chops sour creams, butter, various cheeses and imported or exotic fruits and vegetables. In reality, many of these items are no more expensive, often times less expensive than packaged food. You can get a wide variety of good, wholesome food from those areas of the grocery store. Notice too I didn’t suggest cutting the dollar amount of benefits, just restricting the kinds of things that can be bought.

If they can’t have few items then it encourages the recipients to exit the program.

I agree with this post. I have a friend who got married very young (19), had a baby, then her new husband bailed on her shortly after the baby was born. She had to use public assistance to survive and provide for her baby for a while, but it was never a lifestyle or anything she would choose to do again (or even in the first place). She is very resourceful, and got back on her feet.

For those truly in need, thank God this assistance is available.

For those who abuse it and commit fraud...well, I won’t finish that sentence. Another friend of mine was a Welfare Fraud Investigator for about 20 years. Taxpayers not only pay for welfare, but for tens of thousands of people to investigate the huge amount of fraud. Yes, there has to be a better way without leaving those AMERICANS truly in need out to dry.

Back in the day, the 60s, people only got commodities. The cheese, split peas and other stuff were great. Some kids in scouts would bring it on campouts.

I’ve been on food stamps a few times as a single adult person. The ultimate reason why, as I’ve come to understand it, is that it’s been the Lord’s will for me to experience the things I have.

Anyway, I know there are people who abuse them in different ways, and I did buy things like soda pop and different treats, in addition to healthy food. When you don’t have much, and you’re not on drugs or abusing alcohol (which some low-income people are, but many aren’t), then food is something to look forward to.

I have been blessed to help family and friends.

That’s how all of my family has always got by....hard work, and helping each other out, when need be.

Food stamps were completely out of the question.

The EBT/SNAP program should be for foods that can be managed/prepared for the month. No credit card, no coupons. Food only.

A good friend of our family’s immigrated here, from Cuba, at a young age. Her mother and she arrived first, before her father could get here. Her grandmother arrived within the year that she arrived. Her mother took in laundry, and worked with other young mothers to watch each other’s kids, while the other mom worked, until her grandmother arrived and could care for her.

They received assistance for one year. Their assistance consisted of one block of cheese, two loaves of bread and a gallon of milk.

She told me that they were very appreciative and careful with their monthly allotments.

Today, she is a very successful, self-made businesswoman. It really infuriates her to see so many on welfare, receiving so much....for YEARS! Especially those here illegally.

So, that should be the first order of cleaning up the welfare rolls....provide ONLY food (not pre-prepared), only for a year (with special considerations, as needed) and NOT to those here illegally.

Profound words.

I think everyone should look at those less fortunate, whether their situation is temporary or permanent, and give thanks, "But for the Grace of God go I."

It drives me batty that so much junk can be bought with food stamps.

Do gooders. Yes I am sneering as I don’t mean real charitable people but professional do-gooders have pretty much put the kabosh on people doing as your friend’s family did. Can you imagine the certificates, licenses, permits, and the like required now? Illegal day care!!! Unlicensed home based business!!! Someone claim they were being exploited and push them in the direction of the nearest benefits office.

And illegal immigrants on SNAP. Might that have anything to do with the massive expansion of the program? Ummmm.

The ACLU will claim that they can’t afford to pay their utility bills [electric, gas] to prepare the food.

And where are they going to get a full set of Cuisinart double-clad pots & pans?

Spatulas, mixing spoons, salt and spices?

China, silverware to serve it on.

A table and chairs.

Hummmmmm?

Assuming too much.

When we came here in the early 50’s, welfare recipients got a box of staples like flour, cheese, canned goods, etc., and not a lot. There was a wonderful family across the street, elderly grandparents raising their three grandchildren of modest means. He grew vegetables, raised rabbits, chickens, etc., and they all got by. All of them picked grapes in the fields during summer holidays to get outfitted for the school year. I was friends with the kids, and my Mum & Dad and the neighbors hired the grandfather to mow their lawns. True American spirit in that family and it was so impressive.
