Stunning whale sharks, cute sea lions and poor starving polar bears.
But there might be another reason why 14 million people tuned in to watch the latest series of Blue Planet. And it might surprise you.
Watching nature documentaries is as good for our wellbeing as meditation, scientists have found.
Netflix and (actually) chill
Committing to a period of meditation has no greater impact on your mood than tuning to a nature documentary, new research published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests.
Both activities have positive impacts, but the benefits of meditation are more limited than previously thought, suggest scientists who reviewed more than 20 studies of mindful activities including documentary watching.
Meditation has the power to make you feel moderately more compassionate or empathic, researchers say, but watching nature videos might produce similar outcomes.
We think the study, from scientists at Coventry University in the UK, Massey University in New Zealand, and Radboud University in the Netherlands, certainly means you can justify watching a little more Spring Watch.
And, with Attenborough titles like Blue Planet and Planet Earth available to stream on iPlayer, theres never been a more literal way to Netflix and chill.
He’s been lying since at least 2011.
And the “documentaties” are manipulative narratives designed to support a documentarian’s agenda.
Every time I get on the 405 or go to the beach I know there are.
Everything is run through the filter of someone’s mind. Documentaries. Books. Films. News’ stories. I don’t believe everything I hear or read. Finding truth is a never ending process and never completely attainable. One has to take in information from mutiple avenues and be willing to adjust as new information is gleaned. Then, still, it’s all in the eye of the beholder.
I think you are correct on this. Thanks for pointing it out. The headlines/stories are misleading.
Still, I like the nature documentaries and others. And I enjoy Attenborough even though he appears to be a lightning rod.
The photography is wonderful. Love Sir Davids voice.
read that looking at pictures of nature and landscapes is calming, too. Calms me down.
I want to go out like EG Robinson in Soylent Green...with pretty nature scenes and Edvard Grieg music. Just don’t make me into wafers.
I don’t know how much of a liberal he was....I do know I love his programs. He is dearly missed. If he was a liberal he did not rub our faces in it!!!
David Attenborough is alive. Are you thinking of his brother? The one who cloned dinosaurs? LOL.
