Streaming David Attenborough on Netflix is the new mindfulness
The Memo ^ | February 7, 2018 | Kitty Knowles

Stunning whale sharks, cute sea lions and poor starving polar bears.

But there might be another reason why 14 million people tuned in to watch the latest series of Blue Planet. And it might surprise you.

Watching nature documentaries is as good for our wellbeing as meditation, scientists have found.

Netflix and (actually) chill

Committing to a period of meditation has no greater impact on your mood than tuning to a nature documentary, new research published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests.

Both activities have positive impacts, but the benefits of meditation are more limited than previously thought, suggest scientists who reviewed more than 20 studies of mindful activities – including documentary watching.

Meditation has the power to make you feel “moderately more compassionate or empathic”, researchers say, but watching nature videos “might produce similar outcomes”.

We think the study, from scientists at Coventry University in the UK, Massey University in New Zealand, and Radboud University in the Netherlands, certainly means you can justify watching a little more Spring Watch.

And, with Attenborough titles like Blue Planet and Planet Earth available to stream on iPlayer, there’s never been a more literal way to ‘Netflix and chill’.

Attenborough is one of my go to guys for chilling the mind.

And in the music world, Hans Zimmer is the man.

Put those two together = magic:

It’s my understanding that DA has converted to the anthropogenic warming cult.

Which is too bad if true, as I used to really enjoy his shows, esp. the paleontology stuff.

I heartily agree, beaversmom! Love Sir David’s voice, the BBC nature docos now narrated by others are simply not the same.

I hear that. I get so disappointed when I go into one on YT, and it’s not Attenborough.

Certain people can just make you feel like your brain size has increased by listening to them. He’s definitely one.

He may have. I’ve heard brief mentions of it even in his somewhat older stuff, but certain people I will give a pass. He’s one.

Have you seen Round Planet on Netflix? The episode on penguins is hilarious!

Hmm...guess he hasn’t offed himself as he is a big supporter of the euthanasia movement. Just wants others to die, I guess.

I love watching nature documentaries...particularly ones about African wildlife.I don't consider watching them representing “mindfulness” or being a form of “meditation”.I've been fascinated by these creatures since my first trip to East Africa about 40 years ago.

"Mindfulness"? What a load of psychobabble.

I didn’t know that about him.

I found this quote...

Asked about whether he supported the right to die, he said: “I suppose I do really, but [only] if you could solve all the problems of dealing with the misuse of such a right.”

From this article:

https://www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/culture/tv-radio/sir-david-attenborough-would-consider-euthanasia-1-3952793

And this quote from the same source:

The 89-year-old said he would consider voluntary euthanasia “if I was compos mentis and I was really having a wretched life”.

He’s also into population control. He thinks there are too many folks on the planet.

Two excellent, non-Attenborough, African (lioness) documentaries:

I think mindfulness is definitely trendy these days. I had never encountered it until late 2016.

I’m not even anywhere near well-versed on it or a know-it-all. But the little I have tried meditation, it has helped me. I don’t believe in pharmaceuticals, in general, so it’s a non-drug avenue that can be helpful for some.

And I have used nature documentaries to inspire me and reduce anxiety. The same with music. I have done it for a long time. It’s a good stress reliever.

Yup,great stuff...I have both of them on DVD.I bought my first HD TV and bluray player in anticipation or watching that kind of thing. I've spent a small fortune on National Geographic DVDs and blurays.

At least it keeps me off the streets! ;-)

Agreed. I once wstched a few episodes where Oprah was the narrator. Absolutely terrible. She cannot pronounce words properly and is very annoying.

I watched an excellent documentary the other night called The Nazi Officer’s Wife. I knew the narrator was an actress, but I couldn’t place the voice. Turns out it was Susan Sarandon. She has a great voice for narration. I know she’s on the far left but nice voice and she hates Hillary so shes got that going for her. ;)

It’s a cute headline but her statement that “Watching nature documentaries is as good for our wellbeing as meditation, scientists have found.” Is quite simply, a lie. No where does the study reference nature docs, let alone Attenborough.

That’s the problem. Attenborough chills the mind so you don’t quesition his assertions. Attenborpugh has been lying in his programs for years and then defends the lies. When you wathc a documentary you’re watching a distortion of facts, a story if you will, conceived in the mind of the developer. Some may be more factual and contain less errors than others but they are all deceptive to some degree.

True, and when trying to find an alternate source, as the source I first found was from The Independent which can’t be posted here, I came across other headlines that just talked about nature docs, in general.

The Independent, and some others, went with the Attenborough theme.

This is a bald face lie. No where does the study mention documentaries, nature or otherwise and it certainly doesn’t mention David “climate change” Attenborough. “Watching nature documentaries is as good for our wellbeing as meditation, scientists have found.” Yet many of you will start spouting this nonsense and it will become sufficiently “truthy” that no amount of facts will dissuade you from your delusion. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-20299-z.epdf?author_access_token=Gi6wtTEF9OH9fKeztSWL8dRgN0jAjWel9jnR3ZoTv0Ob79z2vjzwoJFqL7BOu2zdzCBPIZhUy0r6S5stTfRKhC5bqEhFGP6_nUjeD7QkBpKGwzq2WQwywTNsEi3lQvodxtyf7hD1f5HqhCTfvYqRVg%3D%3D
