Trump Asks Pentagon to Plan Military Parade
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 7, 2018 | Julie Bykowicz

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Defense is planning a military parade at the request of President Donald Trump, White House and Pentagon officials said Tuesday.

After observing the Bastille Day celebrations in Paris last year, Mr. Trump said he wanted to hold a similar parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, perhaps to celebrate the Fourth of July.

The French parade last July, which also marked the centennial of the U.S. entry into World War I, featured more than 6,000 service members, tanks and planes overhead in an elaborate display of military might. French President Emmanuel Macron invited Mr. Trump to watch the parade beside him.

“It was one of the greatest parades I’ve ever seen,” Mr. Trump said in September at the Lotte New York Palace hotel. “And to a large extent, because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington, down Pennsylvania Avenue. I don’t know. We’re going to have to try and top it.”

The Washington Post first reported the Mr. Trump had asked the Pentagon to arrange an event in the Bastille Day style. Pentagon officials said late Tuesday that plans were in their infancy.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joe Dunford, acknowledged the parade plans while traveling in Asia. “I’m aware of the president’s request and we are in the initial planning stages to meet the president’s direction,” he said during a stop in Bangkok.

The White House said the decision demonstrated Mr. Trump’s support for the military.

Thanks Chainmail. Too bad some here have been so brainwashed with doubts. It makes me laugh sadly when others complain about the costs. Never heard from them when Obama was driving up our national debt by many trillions and destroying our economy as well as starving our military to death.

It always surprises me to hear antimilitary voices on the Freerepublic. Salon or Huffpost, sure - but a conservative site?

Weird.

When I got back from Vietnam I wore my uniform to go visit my parents. I was accosted by some lady who was connectedto an Anti Vietnam War demonstration nearby. She yelled a bunch of stuff at me about Vietnam and finished with “.. And I’ll NEVER let my son be a Marine!”.

I said “ Ma’am, I never asked my Mom if I could join the Marines - and when your son becomes a man, he won’t ask you either.”

That shut her up.

Expat, short for expatriate is defined in every dictionary I know of as someone who is exiled from his “patria” which means his home country. So.............since you claim not to live outside the states, obviously you have taken the liberty of redefining a known word and its meaning. On what authority?

Thank you for your service and your continued pride in our military. You and all our men who served in Nam were betrayed by the homegrown commies then as well as now. Finally we have a president who supports our men in uniform. Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition.

Bravo! My son didn’t ask me either. I was surprised, but proud of him. He joined my favorite, the Marines.

Your original post was about “hardship and risk” and FReepers that have not served.

Not much hardship and risk loading ammo boxes and filling sandbags.

Every man who serves is to be commended;they are greatly needed,,but men who don’t serve shouldn’t be insulted.

I'm with you: a good old-fashioned military parade on the 4th of July would be outstanding.

So true. The 'oh no sojers' element here is just depressing. NK/Russia/China parades always lean to just be a hardware showoff. A little HISTORY from conflicts past and present just scares the SJWs to death. While the men couldn't be there, marching the colors of Vietnam units like 5th Marines, the 26th Regiment. Army Airborne, Air Cavalry and Light Infantry Air mobile units, Air Force and Navy colors. Leading up to the Iraq/Afghan units and their equipment. 10th Mountain, Guard units to the men/equipment over in the Afghan/Iraq/Syria theatre today. A 50 year History showing the units, the humans that fought these battles and fighting them today. Doesn't have to be a missile or manpower numbers comparison. Libs are just so auto anti-military they have forgot what pride is, it's not a rainbow flag, but can be military combat standards and ribbons.

Depends. Sometimes the ammo dumps got hit by rockets and the whole thing went up. People filling sandbags free up the men with the courage and talent for combat. Everybody can and should do what they are able.

So, if someone’s not inclined to serve, they should get a free ride? Should someone who has served in combat and been severely wounded, like my younger brother and I, are we supposed to feel great about fellow citizens that didn’t bother to help?

We have had several alleged conservatives spout off about how terrible it would be to have a national military parade. How are their opinions any different than the denizens of Salon or the Democratic Underground?

Gosh, that sounds great. It’d be wonderful to see all those proud units represented - at last.

You did bring up a troubling note: you know that the homos are going to want have their own part of the parade and screw things up, like they for the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

I certainly understand your viewpoint because of your experience.

I have a question,(not intended to be sarcastic)——If every single fit, able man tried to join the military would they be accepted? In other words, would the Defense budget be able to handle them?

I have 3 sons, all in their fifties, and only one went into the service(USMC)———I can only think of 3 others from their large group of friends that enlisted.

You and your brother deserve the best after your sacrifice.

Oh yes easy. At 120 bucks an hour for lowboys to haul the dam things is really easy.

A good pass and review is more appealing to everyone than a typical welcome home parade, like was done after the gulf war when a lot of those pieces of equipment were on board of a vessel and could be unloaded dockside right near the heart or NYC.

BTW. Rail Freight for such is about 4 cents per ton per loaded mile

You know you’ve won a FR argument when your opponent is reduced to attacking your screen name.

Side comment #1: Yes, I’ve been accused of just leaning conservative, based solely on my screen name.

Side comment #2: I’ve been here on FR for 8+ years now (how time flies). And I’m surprised - and saddened - at the level of venom directed at you, and at some others here. Such attacks do nothing to change anyone’s minds. And changing minds should be the goal of any good debate.

I know that I’ve gone off the rails a time or two myself, but I do try to follow the wise words of Ronald Reagan while on FR: “The person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and an ally - not a 20 percent traitor.”
