This is the party that burnt the country to the ground over whether or not they could own people. Because the United States would have immediately outlawed slavery if the South had remained in the Union?
The way I read history, Lincoln promised them that he would protect slavery if they would just stay in the union, so I don't think slavery was the issue over which they were fighting.
