I'm trying to keep an open mind on this. With that said, why in God's name was Manafort indicted on a simple process charge? How would that fit into the narrative?

You're confusing Manafort with Flynn.
Flynn was indicted on a "simple process charge" because they couldn't indict him on anything else.
