It looks like Christopher Columbus can stay put. For now.
Earlier this month, New York Citys Advisory Commission on City Art, Monuments, and Markers announced that the 76-foot monument to Columbus can remain at the traffic circle at the southwest corner of Central Park, despite protests from groups claiming to speak for Native Americans.
For both Italian Americans, who view Columbus as a symbol of ethnic pride, and Latinos, whose culture was born from the Spanish colonization ushered in by Columbus, the decision comes as a relief. But the commissions report is not all good news. A close review reveals the precarious place of Columbus, and other historic figures, in todays culture of grievance.
Recall that New York mayor Bill de Blasio announced the commissions formation amid controversy over Confederate war memorials in Charlottesville, Va., and elsewhere. Never mind that New York isnt exactly known for its monuments to southern generals. Fear of missing out on the icon-smashing bandwagon led de Blasio to set his sights on other symbols of hate, targeting Columbus, in particular, for immediate attention.
But this didnt stop de Blasio from flaunting his Italian heritage by marching in the annual Columbus Day parade in October. Apparently, de Blasio, who was born Warren Wilhelm Jr. but now uses his mothers maiden name (for obvious political reasons), wants to have things both ways: to cultivate the good will of Italian Americans while simultaneously stoking his radical-progressive base.

Guess it wasn’t about just Confederate statues...
When the pendulum swings back right, and I expect that to happen this year, the left, blm, antifa and the rest of their ilk will be hit so hard upside the head they’re not going to know what happened. We’ve all had more than enough of their ridiculous bull schiff and we’re not going to keep taking it.
I thought that Columbus was a swarthy Mediterranean type....
Paging Joe Piscopo!
RE: Paging Joe Piscopo!
Wasn’t he with SNL? What’s he got to do with this?
It’s not about a statue. It’s about destroying the history of this country. Columbus brought Christianity to this country, and that’s why the left hates him. No matter what they say, this is the reason.
FWIW there seem to be no signs that Donald Trump wants to put the grievance shoe on the other foot “just because we can.”
He’s trying to facilitate a rising tide that will “lift all boats.” Many people have sinned grievously not just against man, but against God, which is worse. Can we stop lamenting the spilled milk and start enjoying what is coming from the new dairy?
The Frankfurt School has always played a long game, and the end of it is destruction, tearing down the civilization.
Offendsensitivity is simply another tool of these cretins, part of Political Correctness.
There is no living with PCdiots. No reason to want to. Whatever offends them do more of it. Do more in their face. They like being offended: give them both barrels.
... or, as in this instance, put up more statues.
Christianity is a sin-to-salvation story and thus none of its players but Jesus alone need be perfect.
But we also need to act that way for our Christianity to be credible.
Because Columbus was a sinner, we need to watch out for the consequences of idolization. We could do worse than to show our noted historical figures warts and all — as the bible does its.
Don’t be puerile.
Not childish at all. PCdiots like to be aggravated, so let’s give them what they want.
Civility with such persons is overrated. They are empathy run amuck. Acting as if they are worth the effort of getting along with is what empowers them, what they have exploited in others to advance their madness.
Best to simply oppose them. Do not give them anything they want. Do not share in their dementia.
I listen to AM970 morning show with Joe Piscopo (SNL) from 6am to 10am. Hes against removing Columbus statue in NYC. Said hes not gonna let it happen. Good show.
Correction to the last sentence: Do not give in to anything they want.
There is plenty of room to clarify the situation without such gratuitous offense as you propose.
I have said myself to American Indians: Let’s take the sinful bull by the horns. First, colonists didn’t arrive at an utterly peaceful shangri-la. American Indians often fought each other cruelly. Second, yes colonists sinned. Even the children of Pilgrims forgot their parents’ Christian convictions which had augured peace. That’s what Christianity preaches is always possible. Every generation leans on God or the devil by its choice in the face of the leading of God. Third, it is far better that America, a sitting duck for conquest, was conquered at least by nominal Christians. If Islamists had done it, American Indians would be even rarer or gone, and wouldn’t even be able to complain in public.
Let us show credibly by our conduct that the Lord is a valid answer to all complaints. Then we can preach that too with credibility and integrity.
God says “Please your neighbor to his edification.”
IIRC, Joe said something to the effect of, “You really think Italians in NYC will let this happen?”
I never mentioned the President in my post. He's not omnipotent. The pendulum is public opinion. That's what's about to change and those who have abused their power will pay.
Can we stop lamenting the spilled milk and start enjoying what is coming from the new dairy?
No. Epic corruption and abuse of power has gone unchecked for years. Pedophilia and worse has gone unpunished. These monsters must face justice.
I think the statue should come down. Look at what has happened in Baltimore since they’ve gotten rid of the Confederate statues, crime is now non-existent and high school graduation rates are one hundred percent.
