Senate Democrats on Monday voted overwhelmingly to end the government shutdown without protections for the DREAMERs - who were protected from deportation and allowed to legally work by the Obama-era DACA policy eliminated by President Trump in 2017.
For the Democratic Party’s progressive base, their capitulation was a disappointing end to a moment in which it seemed like the party might finally take a real stand against abhorrent Republican policies.
The DREAMERs were meant to be an unassailable group of people after whom not even the most craven of elected officials could justify going. And yet, here we are.
Maybe Obama should have pushed for a more significant immigration reform from the start, instead of carving off the most sympathetic group for assistance under DACA, then putting off the rest of immigration reform for President Clinton to deal with on a day that would never come.
It’s time for Democrats to re-evaluate incrementalist tactics like these, based on their actual outcomes.
As 2018 and 2020 approach, Democratic candidates would do well to keep listening to progressive movements and leaders, not Trump voters they hope can be turned at the polls.

A law that doesn’t embrace a morality which can get a consensus is one that will need tyranny to keep in place.
Mexican kids were often cruelly pushed into this. That’s a cynical abuse. Mexico doesn’t share official US scruples about child labor. If US parents acted that way, their kids would be put in foster care in an effort to avert more abuse.

Not "Democrat" leaders. "Party" leaders. To a communist, there is only one Party. And its agenda is "progressive" It is also always in control; its opponents are "reactionary" ... not having minds or agenda of their own ... just stupidly, insanely, reacting against the Party.

A revealing choice of words, this. "Meant", not "supposed", "meant" meaning deliberately positioned that way, "meant" meaning "the narrative was established, it was rock solid." Peck is aware that the whole heartstring-plucking "DREAMER" narrative is phony as hell, it's just supposed to have worked anyway and it didn't. What could be wrong?
Well, for one thing, the entire "the party should stop listening to those bigoted non-educated working class people and get back to its base, urban hipsters like me" has the virtue of having cost the Dems the last Presidential election and it doesn't look like our author has figured that out yet. For another, "unassailable" means simply that she thought they'd constructed an indestructible tool and look, they broke it! They can't break our tool! And for a third, had at any point over the last eight year administration, the Dems been serious about enforcing the existing laws, we wouldn't be having this conversation and their set-up victims wouldn't be vulnerable. We didn't set them up, the Dems did, like putting babies on a railroad track and then complaining when the train comes along.
This, however, is truly the face of communism: cynical, manipulative, and utterly amoral. I would no more take Peck's arguments seriously than I would a rattlesnake's.
