Nervous Republicans fear they’ll pay if government shuts down

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is confident that Democrats will take the blame if the government shuts down this weekend or Congress fails to find a fix to prevent DACA recipients from being deported. But Republicans on Capitol Hill aren't so sure.

Many of them fear that voters would fault the GOP after looking at Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, his past flirtation with letting federal funding expire and the fact that Republicans are in control of the White House, the Senate and the House.

"When there are shutdowns, our side usually takes the hit," said Republican Rep. Charlie Dent, who is retiring from the competitive Allentown, Penn.,-based district he's represented for nearly a dozen years.

"It will be difficult for us to deflect the blame — whether we deserve it or not," he added.

Putting government operations at risk is a political gamble for both sides, but it's clear that Republicans think the stakes — possibly their control of Congress — are too high to chance a shutdown or the possible deportation of DACA recipients.

If they were as certain as Trump that Democrats would take the fall, GOP campaign operatives would be working overtime to ensure Congress failed.

Yes, it was so horrible the last time it happened, the GOP was swept into Congress at a record rate.

I guess he hasn’t had his eyes open.

Government shutdown = Paid Time Off.

Everyone still gets their checks, and the military stays on duty.

Not exactly a crisis.

This is exactly as liberals see it. All political - never mind what's good for the country. What sickening humans they are.

in the last shut down, the only pain at the fed level was to the people who wanted to visit places.
The fed workers who got sent home eventually got paid...

It’s the prime example of the old joke - “I’m only here for the beer!” As former congressman Tim Griffith told the tea party “Best job I ever had, I’d like to keep it” followed by “the Dems and republicans want the same thing for America, we just have different ways to get there”.

I don’t know Anything the DNC wants for America that is acceptable. Neither did Arkansas voters. But we still have a GOPe party in Arkansas which is why this man is now our Lt. Gov. Sad, but true.

The stupid party is so bad a messaging that almost anything makes them nervous and jittery, often to the point of falling farther down the stupid tree. I won’t be the least surprised if they manage to give up one or both houses before the end of Trump’s term.

The `rats have been setting the stage since this time last year: “resistance” and all of their obstructionism; their vicious anti-fa stormtroopers; and “I will not comply, I won’t attend the SOTU, I will hold my breath until I turn blue.”
There is no doubt as to who the public will blame. And we don’t have a petty, egg-sucking America-hating SOB in the WH this time. We have a warrior, an American success story who loves the bully pulpit and a few good Americans still in Congress. Shut it down.

The GOP never “paid” for a shut down during the Obama years, despite the efforts of Obama and the press. Why would this year be any different, particularly when it is obvious the Democrats are forcing the “shut down”.

However, the Republicans do deserve to pay for not passing a budget before the beginning of the current fiscal year which began October 1, 2017. With control of both houses of Congress, and the executive branch, they have squandered an opportunity to demonstrate fiscal and budgetary responsibility. With control of Congress they own the sad state of the budget process.

When Ted Cruz shut down the government, the GOP won HUGE in the next election. Let the Democrats shut it down over DACA and the GOP will win huge this fall.

I’m not nervous. Shut it down. The employees will get any back pay they might miss and the respite from DC’s banging on the pots and pans will give us a chance to talk about something else.

It is also FAKE NEWS> The Republicans are finally growing a spine thanks to Trump’s counsel. They are not going to roll over again, in spite of the couple of girly men who inhabit Republican seats.
