WASHINGTON President Donald Trump is confident that Democrats will take the blame if the government shuts down this weekend or Congress fails to find a fix to prevent DACA recipients from being deported. But Republicans on Capitol Hill aren't so sure.
Many of them fear that voters would fault the GOP after looking at Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, his past flirtation with letting federal funding expire and the fact that Republicans are in control of the White House, the Senate and the House.
"When there are shutdowns, our side usually takes the hit," said Republican Rep. Charlie Dent, who is retiring from the competitive Allentown, Penn.,-based district he's represented for nearly a dozen years.
"It will be difficult for us to deflect the blame whether we deserve it or not," he added.
Putting government operations at risk is a political gamble for both sides, but it's clear that Republicans think the stakes possibly their control of Congress are too high to chance a shutdown or the possible deportation of DACA recipients.
If they were as certain as Trump that Democrats would take the fall, GOP campaign operatives would be working overtime to ensure Congress failed.

The way to handle a shut down is to say that they’promised less government and now they’re delivering on that promise!
BS
This is all on the Democrats. Everyone knows that.
GROW A PAIR!!! Trump is giving you a GREAT EXAMPLE!!!
Based on many articles, the GOP is already going to pay in the mid-terms
even before DACA.
So full steam ahead President Trump.
These Republicans should buy up all those pink pussy hats that nobody wants any more because, that is what they are.
Exactly, but the RINO’s will run screaming and crying because they are in league with the RATS and do their bidding.
The nervous need to get the message thru their own heads, then thru constituents’ heads, that the Democrats are saying that legalizing illegal immigration is MORE important than EVERYTHING ELSE the government does. It’s not; it’s illegal for a reason - worth a debate on its own, but NOT worth holding the country hostage over.
It is NOT the Republicans shutting things down, it’s the Democrats.
If the Republicans are afraid, then it is the right thing to do.
For the life of me I do not understand how these men (and women) made to this level of government when they are afraid to stand up for something (other than bash President Trump).
Shame on them for selling out the people that voted for them. Shame.
The 17% should be told to stay home for good if it shuts down and nobody notices. That would be a meaningful cut.
The Republicans are always nervous nellies when they are required to take a stand.
Shut down the government? Go ahead. Make my day.
All Trump has to do is call a national address and tell the People that the democrats are shutting down the government over illegal aliens.
Why, in the tall grass, of course!
They will not suffer if every damn time they mention the word “shutdown” they instead say “Democrat shutdown”, but they cannot train themselves to do any such thing because it would be functional and effective.
Nervous Republicans fear theyll pay if government shuts down
Faux backbones are trembling, the jelly is quivering, everything all atwitter and aflutter. Oh My ... poor guys! Ya gotta feel sorry for those drug addled millionaires ...
Republicans need to act like they are the majority in the House and Senate. Pass a budget over the minority party.
I hate these quivering ganglia. They make me puke. The shut down of “non essential” government is our greatest day!! “Non essential government “ should not exist.” I don’t care who shuts it down.
Oooh the timid, scared, frightened, little Repubics, ooooooh!
If the dems care about the Drainers..I mean the dreamers.. they better give Trump the wall.
