A very interesting, first-hand, report on life in one of what can be argued to be one of the democratic success stories in Africa.

Bottom line, don't drink the water and don't invite the people to come here expecting them to magically change to our way of life and doing things.

Enjoy

“because it was, in the words of the Peace Corps doctor, “a fecalized environment.” . .”

A fecalized environment? Is that anything like a “shithole”?

Good article.

If the Africans / Hispanics / etc. voted for Republicans, Democrats wouldn’t want them here. They want to steal elections via immigration and don’t care what they destroy in the process. To them, power is everything. There’s nothing else.

One of the Obama administration members said she carried Mao’s Little Red Book with her. When speaking to (of all things) a girl school graduation she said that “we know all power comes from the barrel of a gun...”

This is what Democrats believe. There’s only power. You have it or you don’t.

That’s why they’re in absolute mental meltdown to reattain it. Lying media, impeachment, immigration of 3rd worlders, mass murder. Doesn’t matter to them.

Thats great, but Scandinavian countries like Norway, Denmark, Sweden et al. - in their espousal of socialism, atheism, euthanasia-on-demand, systematic abortion of the disabled, high suicide rates, eco-mania, climate change fanaticism...

Are not models either and part of the problem when it comes to the corrosion of civilization.

Senegal is a success story in terms of governance, but in fact is still a sh*thole. We wish them the best in conquering their fecal environment.

And we will do our best to conquer ours in Washington D.C. , our sh*thole.

If we fail, we also will have spreading fecal environments like Senegal, just as we now do in various sanctuary cities in America.

The world is full of sh*t but we Americans will never be made to eat it by anyone.

When my father was stationed in France, they were going somewhere with some friends who had a car. The driver nearly ran off the road when he saw a woman using the side of the road as a bathroom. This was back in the early 60s and apparently not an unusual situation for some of the French citizenry. My mother said Paris was very unclean. It’s not always third-world nations that have unsanitary streets. Just look at parts of California.

We have the right to choose what kind of country to live in. I was happy to donate a year of my life as a young woman to help the poor Senegalese. I am not willing to donate my country.

Great article, thank you for posting it.

My son went on a class/mission trip to Ethiopia and taught English as a Second Language at the mission school. He made life-long friends in Ethiopia and his college accepted students from the mission school to further their education. With that said, that experience made him appreciate all that we have in America and not only material things but cultural as well as our heritage.

One suspects, had she not spent a year in Africa, today she would be an insufferable MSNBC watching know-it-all liberal. Foreign travel definitely gives one perspective.

family was crucial to people there in a way Americans cannot comprehend

Give me a freaking break, Pollyanna. You just spent half a dozen paragraphs describing FGM freak shows and a culture of idle men who demand idolatry.

Who elected her to speak - or even think - for all Americans? Who says many Americans - make that most Americans - don't regard family as the most precious thing in their lives?

AT fell down badly publishing this rot.

An acquaintance was there for the same thing (for a very short time; she became extremely ill and had to come back permanently); she described the superstitions of even the “educated” people as bizarre - while those same people mocked the “more-superstitious” underclass.

Disgusting and frankly, hopeless.

Thank you! Good article. My only disagreement is that Americans think the Protestant Work Ethic is alive and well in Senegal! Any American who thinks that is an idiot.

Several years ago, Al Gore’s Current TV had a program on the problem with open defecation in SE Asia. The term Sh*t” was used over and over again, along with video of people squatting and wiping with their left hand,no leaves.

Which all reminded me of a poem I saw on a restroom wall.

“In days of old when Knights were bold,
And toilets weren’t invented.
They dropped their load on the side of the road,
And journeyed on contented.”

But then the ancients made a religion of it...Baal Peor.

I was charged with visiting a missionary to Nigeria to inventory the goods to be shipped to a small village in a 40 container to prepare the manifest. The goods ranged from a big Caterpillar diesel generator to syringes and other small medical supplies. The visit was made to a cabbage warehouse in western North Carolina mountains during the cabbage off season .

The effort was organized and the physician missionary was supported by five small mountain baptist congregations. The container load of stuff was for the purpose of opening a clinic.

Although the ship called in nigeria, the container was waylaid and never made it to the back country village. The missionary had to return to America
