Democrat Patty Schachtner won a special election for a state Senate seat in Wisconsin on Tuesday, scoring a huge upset victory for her party in a district that President Donald Trump handily captured just over a year ago.
It was the latest in a string of election victories for Democrats since Trump took office, and a sign of hope for the party that the energy from the base and frustration with the president could lead to more wins in November.
With every precinct counted, The Washington Post reported that Schachtner, the chief medical examiner for St. Croix County, won by 9 percentage points.

Chronically depressed Republican turnout for one. In a heavily GOP State Senate district near mine, a State Rep heavily favored to win a recent special election took it by just 2% over a non-entity Dem in a district he won by over 50% of the vote in Nov 2016.
57,000 votes went to the GOP State Senator in WI-10 in Nov 2016, while apparently just 9,900 voted for the GOP State Rep running for her seat this evening. The Dem won with 12,250 votes (while the Dem running in Nov ‘16 got 33,000). So do the math and see the Dems got 1/3rd+ of their voters mobilized while the GOP could barely get over 1/6th of theirs. That’s appalling.
I think the RINO’S want to be the minority party.
The silver lining is going to be a bloodbath if people don’t start getting off their couches.
The RINO’S have dampened enthusiasm in the last year. Hard to get the base motivated when the party doesnt support Trump.
Republicans need to wake up or there will be no chance to get any more of the agenda through after November.
Republicans still hold a pretty strong 18-14 lead in Wisconsin. Whop-de-doo.....
The silver lining is going to be a bloodbath if people dont start getting off their couches.
Your beef is with the “Republicans” spending their time attacking POTUS and giving a free pass to the progressive Democrats. Could they be giving top cover for Democrats because they prefer the progressive corportist agenda to Trump? You betcha.
Thanks, Fred.
I tend to wonder, like a few others on this thread, if the Pubbie leadership are purposely NOT wanting to win these races.
I saw Roma Romney Downey (what ever her name is) on Laura Ingraham’s show, tonight. She said R’s are ENERGIZED!! That she is seeing the most small dollar donations being made (to RNC), in a long time.
Okay....so, where are our GOTV and ‘energizing’ efforts for these state rep races????
You are right. The Dims are as motivated now as we were in 2016. We are still gloating over our big wins in 2016 instead of realizing that the real battle is just now beginning. The almost loss of the VA House of Delegates was a real eye-opener.
Where is the GOTV effort ? Where is Trump ? .. the RNC as well , as the NRSC have pulled in vast amounts of money ...what the hell are they doing with it ? Bannon and his war are gone , why are the Repubs not fighting this Dim onslaught ?
Four out of five special elections today went Republican - two in SC, one in Iowa, and one of the two in Wisconsin.
Americans for Prosperity (yep, Koch Bros) donated quite a big chunk to this WI race, to no avail.
What groups are out there working to get the Repub base fired up, if Pubbie leadership is bringing everyone down? Any?
Read the stats.
The fact of the matter is that even if only 60% of Republicans support Trump, that was MORE than enough votes to win the WI Special election. FAR MORE than enough.
We turned out 1/6 of our voters for this election. That's <17%. If only half of the Republicans who voted for Trump had turned out--with ZERO of the 40% RINOs--the Democrat would have been crushed.
In my NJ in 2017, Republicans lost Somerset County. Somerset! One of the most Republican counties in America!
Republicans could face a wipeout in November.
Then Pubbies need to get out front and center and claim these 3 out of 4 wins as the BELLWEATHER for things to come.
Use this as motivation momentum for 2018.
Or many on these boards see the one offs for what they are
That fact masks some very bad numbers. Under the stats there are very ominous numbers.
Were going to get our asses kicked.
For far too many, defeating Hillary was their motivation in 2016.
Republicans have a bad history of being complacent. This complacency will seal our doom.
