I was a broke as shit 20 something when I left Michigan for San Diego’s North County.

Never rented without an ocean view.

Also, love the mountains.

Best of luck.

You forgot one small thing. The wine industry is booming in North Texas. The product is great, and the prices are even better, especially if you like reds.

Any place except the west coast states.

I have to (reluctantly) agree. Arguably the most picturesque scenery in the US, but spoiled and defiled by leftist politics.

Of course, they spread like disease and bring their politics with them so no geographical area is exempt.

My parents have been looking to move to Kentucky, and it is beautiful country. Agree with hardspunned’s recommendation to stay away from Louisville.

There are a lot of friendly small towns just east of the Rockies, an area called The Front Range, in CO.

Yes, Balding_Eagle, there are and we're living in one of them.

I love living here.

Chickensoup, you have email.

Traverse City, MI are possibilities for the better.

Just skip it and move up to the Leelanau peninsula.

Check out Lafayette, La.

That’s my hope and prayer. Has everything you mentioned as important. And food to die for.

North Idaho!

Yes indeed. A real gem. Sandpoint a jewel. Any small town up here is great. Four seasons, winters not too severe because we're west of the continental divide. Lakes and woods galore and the best part, good, down to earth people. Redoubt Country.

Mostly conservative, self sufficient 2nd Amendment prepper types who tend to help their neighbors if need be. I would say kinda' old school so to speak. Minimal crime, some drugs but not severe. Cost of living low compared to the rest of the country. Hunting, fishing, clear air. . well, you get the drift.

DuckDuckGo search of North Idaho Tourism

Hulett, Wyoming

Lowest tax burden in the country, very conservative rural area.

Hulett, known as the "Best Little Town In The West", is nestled between the red sandstone cliffs of the Belle Fourche River. Surrounded by the Bear Lodge National Forest, Hulett is made up of grassy prairies and pine covered bluffs. Hulett is also known as "a place where the sidewalk ends and the west begins". The charming town is filled with breathtaking scenery, shops, cuisine and ranchers.

We retired in E. TN — a small town west of Knoxville. Bible Belt.
Politically conservative.
No income tax (except on investments).
Low property taxes.
Low real estate costs.
Real people; nobody putting on “airs”.

Before last week, I would have recommended Carmel, Indiana as well...now they are building a big Muslim Mosque so who knows what that will bring. I’d say Brownsburg where my brother in law and sister live....very nice and cheaper then Carmel.

I lived in the Los Angeles area for 40 years. Moved to Charlotte, NC three years ago. I hate it here. Beyond hate it. I guess what a person’s retirement needs are would determine what works for them. For me, I need to be near a VA medical facility since that’s my med coverage. I also want to be in a state with no state income tax. And I’d prefer a warmer winter climate than what Charlotte has. Of those states, only Florida, Nevada and Texas meet my needs.
