What Happens When You Don't Build Natural Gas Pipelines?
Jude Clemente , CONTRIBUTOR
The answer to the question posed is a really, really bad chain reaction: magnified during winter and peak demand...with a pipeline shortage...a natural gas shortage is created, prices for both natural gas and electricity skyrocket, CO2 emissions go up because more carbon intensive fuels are forced to compensate.
Headquartered in New York, New Jersey, and New England (hereafter the "Northeast"), the devastating consequences of the anti-pipeline business just reared its ugly head again as we faced the coldest temperatures since The Polar Vortex of 2013-2014. Two of my Forbes colleagues recently knocked this issue outta the park again, so see them for mind-blowing stats on price spikes:
"Amid Deep Freeze, New Englanders Can 'Thank' N.Y. Gov. Cuomo For Their High Energy Bills," here
"Natural Gas Demand Hits Record As Cold Bomb Targets Northeast," here.
But, let me just say that natural gas prices in some parts of the Northeast boomed 60-70 times their recent rates because there's not enough pipeline capacity in the region to bring in natural gas in times of high demand. After years of warnings, this remains a massive problem: gas is increasingly being utilized in the Northeast for both generating electricity and heat. For example, gas provides over half of the power in the region, despite no significant gas producing state there.

Yankees freeze?
Good grief, give it time.
Whoever is being paid to put them in doesn’t get rich?
Don’t build them. My Gastar stock is starting to hit its stride.
“...as we faced the coldest temperatures since The Polar Vortex of 2013-2014.”
Cue the cheesy ominous organ music.
Only because Yankee voters are stupid. New York State sits on top of one of the biggest shale systems in the USA. "If" the idiot citizens of NYS hadn't banned directional drilling and fracking, NYS would probably be EXPORTING energy to the rest of the country.
The Marcellus shale is estimated to contain 500 TRILLION cubic feet of natural gas.
Never underestimate the stupidity of liberal voters.
Stupidity has a price.
Create the right environment for drillers, and the Northeast would have plenty of gas by next winter.
Trump needs to tweet that
You can’t built then w/o permits. No permit, no pipeline.
Like the old joke in Texas used to go,
DRIVE LIKE HELL! FREEZE A YANKEE!
Or the deviousness of the Saudis that backed anti-fracking efforts.
This was entirely predictable as well because global warming make sub zero winter storms common. The big question is why aren’t they cranking up the solar panels?
Ummm...you make Warren Buffett richer???

= = =
You have to hire Natural Gas Cowboys to herd the stuff.
“The big question is why arent they cranking up the solar panels?”
The shade from the windmills had decreased the Solar Panel output?
New Englanders are tough. They don’t mind freezing in the dark.
Let them eat windmills.
And Vermont forces the closure of its nuke plant
hoping that some SNOW COVERED solar panels will take its place.
LOL
Exactamundo #15! I reviewed this entire thread to see if anyone knew this. Besides Obambi’s obvious anti American, anti any energy production status, Buffett has large amount of business in hauling oil with trains. And Buffett funneled many millions of dollars to Obambi and his minions. So, the less one has pipelines to use, the more Buffett trains one is forced to use.
