Twitter explains why it won't ban Trump over controversial tweets
CBS News ^ | January 5, 2018 | Unattributed

Twitter Inc. said Friday it will not block world leaders from its social media platform because they play a critical role in global and public conversations. The statement comes after some Twitter users have called on the company to ban President Trump for tweets that they say encourage violence, even stoking fears of a nuclear war between the U.S. and North Korea.

"Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial Tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions," the company said in a blog post Friday.

>>>>What’s the alternative?

>>Someone starting up a competing service without political censorship. Trump’s 65M subscribers are likely a very mobile customer base and will follow wherever he flitters off to, to the ruin of Twitter.

Precisely. And many key parts of his constituency are clued into what a bunch of censoring Leftists that Twitter’s management are. Many at Free Republic and, more importantly, Reddit /The_Donald know this, and are ready to jump.

Thanks. I do see Twitter as a youthful site, but I may be wrong there. I don't frequent the site all that much. I do know adults are there also.

Would be interesting to see some demographic figures.

Well here they are: LINK

I'd bet they might loose 35-50%.

Everything Trump said in that tweet is true. Leftists are a deranged group and wrongheaded.

good decision by Twitter. What would Trump do without it? Serious question...what if Trump lost access to Twitter? What's the alternative?

There are other Internet platforms that Trump would go to if the Twits banned him and millions would go with him. They at Twit recognize this fact losing out.

It would cost billions to start up a competing Twitter. It isn’t going to happen, even with 65M followers.

I absolutely love Twitter! Even despite its descent into becoming just another leftist organ. When it first launched, it was the purest, most frictionless communications medium ever invented. To some extent, it still is. Which is why I suspect President Trump uses it exclusively as a personal tool for communications.

It's a shame Twitter wants to be like FB and the NYT in its leftist censorship.

Now that one of its major shareholders, namely Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has been neutered by the Saudi government, maybe it won't feel as pressured to be like every other coastal media outlet.

Twitter has a good mix of people from most age groups. You can see it in the mix of people who reply to Trump's tweets.

It would be nice if Trump can do to Twitter what he is doing to the GOP: remaking it in his image. But that may be too much to ask.

For now, it's just great that our side has maintained a base in one of the media / social media outlets. Trump is growing it there at Twitter. And our side is fighting alongside him.

Twitter won’t ban President Trump because they like the ad revenue.

Build his own version of Twitter. He’s got enough money and the balls to do it, and he could call it “Trumper”.

Trump would be a powerful enemy of Twitter. He could initiate legislation against their interest, sign executive orders against them and lobby others state, local and national against their interest.

No way in hell these twitter boys are going to go out of their way to piss off trump.

Trump getting banned from Twitter and jumping could be a great way to jumpstart a new conservative social media site.

It would cost billions to start up a competing Twitter. It isn’t going to happen,

First, raising a billion for a fer sure thing is easy enough. Second it wouldn't cost anything like a billion. Market cap of a high P/E multiple established enterprise and startup costs are very different things. Twitters valuation rests on its franchise which it would abandon if it dumped Trump.
