Training Officers to Shoot First, and He Will Answer Questions Later
NY Times ^

Posted on 01/05/2018 10:45:05 AM PST by JP1201

WASHINGTON — The shooting looked bad. But that is when the professor is at his best. A black motorist, pulled to the side of the road for a turn-signal violation, had stuffed his hand into his pocket. The white officer yelled for him to take it out. When the driver started to comply, the officer shot him dead.

The driver was unarmed.

Taking the stand at a public inquest, William J. Lewinski, the psychology professor, explained that the officer had no choice but to act.

“In simple terms,” the district attorney in Portland, Ore., asked, “if I see the gun, I’m dead?”

“In simple terms, that’s it,” Dr. Lewinski replied.

When police officers shoot people under questionable circumstances, Dr. Lewinski is often there to defend their actions. Among the most influential voices on the subject, he has testified in or consulted in nearly 200 cases over the last decade or so and has helped justify countless shootings around the country.

His conclusions are consistent: The officer acted appropriately, even when shooting an unarmed person. Even when shooting someone in the back. Even when witness testimony, forensic evidence or video footage contradicts the officer’s story.

You should go explain on this thread why the homeowner deserved it. That should be fun.

On the rare occasion I have been stopped, by the time the trooper gets to my car I have my insurance card and concealed carry license in my left hand with the window rolled down and my right hand is on the steering wheel. The first thing I say is “I am armed” and tell the officer where the weapon is. They probably already know as they have instant access to the CCL database that is tied to my license plate number.

Oddly when they see the concealed carry card they are put at ease. The cops know the extremely vast majority that legally carry are the good guys. My actions actually got me out of a couple of tickets. They appreciated what I did during the traffic stop. With very rare exceptions, the cops are the good guys. Respect them and they will respect you. They always called me sir and I always called them sir.

ps
That cop should not have been a cop. He did not have the “right stuff” to be a cop.

If you’re advocating that cops should view everyone as the enemy for their own safety. Then it’s time we Americans start treating the cops like an invading enemy force.

That’s right. If you don’t like how your local cops work, run for local office or become a cop yourself.

Do the civic work to reduce crime in your city.

Pretending that “Black Lives Matter” is right about cops it leftist babble.

“Come to my community today and say that while we are burying a fine young man killed in the line of duty. ”

Here’s a thought. Why don’t you send a few of those cops to visit the family of the woman gunned down by that cop in Minneapolis, or the Boy Scout a cop shot in the face after being ordered by that same cop to get out of the car, or the family of the dead guy that psycho cop shot after being screamed at to to the Hokey Pokey, or the poor bastard a cop shot dead after someone “swatted” him, or the grandmother in Atlanta the cops nearly killed after they broke the wrong door down.

I’ll bet your cop friends won’t get a whole lot of warm fuzzies, either.

Streets run both ways, Snookums.

And they are bringing it on themselves by not "policing" their own.

Distrust of cops is not just a negro BLM thing, too many of all colors have been killed with zero repercussions to the killers.

Only when caught.

IIRC, the word was that many cops carried "drop" guns in those days. Some may still, but suspect that modern forensic science makes that a bit more risky now.

no, you don't speak truth...

no cop has any right to kill someone who has his hand in his pocket...

I don't have that right...you don't have that right and cops don't have that right....

its high time cops OBEYED THE LAW and respected fellow citizens....

why don't they shoot to stop the citizen instead of shooting to kill?

that has been the biggest change in the last 30 yrs...now they just kill you...

no charges, no arrest, no trial...just kill...kill, kill, kill...

Sorry your community lost a police officer. That’s sad. But as another Freeper put it;

It used to be cops were there to make people feel safe. Now people have to make sure cops feel safe. And far, far too often cops are killing innocent people under circumstances that would land any other citizen in prison.

And that is absolutely unacceptable and it needs to change.

If ordinary citizens have to fear cops, then what is the point of having them?
We as a society choose to use them because we wanted to farm the work out to cheaper labor. If we are not getting out money’s worth then we should quit contracting the service.
Something happens at most people’s house in the middle of the night? They will take care of it themselves, instead of waiting for the slow to respond, less than perfect contractors to show.
An armed population never needed police. Isn’t that where we went astray? We let the government convince the public that these contractors would do a better, more complete, better informed job. Most can, some cannot.
Quit protecting the bad apples.
Oust them and perhaps the perception of the balance will improve.

FYI...another one.

Yup. Saw that earlier. It's frightening how often this kind of thing occurs.

“If ordinary citizens have to fear cops, then what is the point of having them?”

To keep the proles in line, of course.

“An armed population never needed police. Isn’t that where we went astray?”

We need some entity to keep order while honest citizens go to work. Why you ask? Because humans are fallen creatures, that’s why. We will always have criminal a-holes among us. But since we all can’t watch our backs, families, and belongings 24-7 we need sheepdogs.

But even sheepdogs, as useful and valuable as they are, require training and supervision lest they revert to their more base animal nature. It’s the same with people. You can give an a**hole a badge a uniform and a gun. But in the end all you you’ll have is an armed snappily dressed a-hole you wouldn’t want anywhere near your daughter.

So there’s the rub. And it’s as old as mankind. Who watches the watchmen?

Most of those talking trash about the police are the first to call them when things get crazy

Many have learned the opposite. There's no bad situation that can't be made worse with the presence of a cop.

I mention this whenever these threads come up and FR starts sounding like an Antifa rally -- out of a nation of 315 million people...there were fewer than 1000 fatal shootinga by police in 2017.

The issue is not the number of fatal shootings. The issue is the attitude toward those fatal shootings, especially when the shooting was blatantly unnecessary. The video circulating just recently of the cops making the guy in his underwear crawl toward them, then gunning him down when he was unarmed is the perfect example of this. This should never happen in a civilized country. But is the attitude "Oh no, we screwed up! Our officers should be better trained!" ? Nope. It was "he followed procedure and feared for his safety." Therein lies the problem. With such an attitude, these incidents will only increase, and the only remedy will be retaliation by the beleaguered public.
