Donald Trump’s Biggest Fear: A Romney 2020 Primary Challenge
National Interest ^ | January 8, 2017 | Jacob Heilbrunn

Posted on 01/03/2018 7:52:40 AM PST by C19fan

With Sen. Orrin Hatch’s announcement that he will not run again in 2018, Mitt Romney is on the verge of gaining his revenge against President Donald Trump. Until now, the Republican establishment has lacked a figurehead behind which it could mobilize against Trump. If Romney runs for Hatch’s position, he will be poised to challenge Trump in the 2020 Republican primary and to seek to rejuvenate the GOP establishment. Having failed twice, he may believe that the third time is the charm in running for the presidency.

Here's the only question that matters as far as Romney's potential as a 2020 presidential candidate:

What state would Romney win in 2020 that he lost in 2012?

Every time I look at the 2012 electoral map, I only see opportunities for Romney to LOSE states, not GAIN them.

The Dems know Romney is a wussy and they can bowl him over.

Stephanie Cutter and Obama spent $30 MM on ads calling Romney a murderer and he never fought back once! What a coward!

Isn’t it a bit unseemly for a republican to run against the incumbent?

But aren't you assuming Romney (or McCain, McConnell, Ryan, Graham, Thune, Chamblis, ....) are actually republicans? (Well, they certainly are NOT conservatives!)

LOL! I doubt he’s worried about that.

But don’t put it past the swamp rats to try to run Romney. They don’t care that Romney lost once and could never win.

As long a swamp rat gets in, they’ll be happy.

DACA has been rescinded. No new applicants and it will end in March. It is up to Congress to come up with a solution.

Thanks for the clarification..poor wording on my part. Let me try this one..

“Remove/deport all illegals, including DACA parasites immediately, as he stated he would, over and over”.

Why slow dance with congress? Those losers are playing Trump for a fool..at our expense, as usual. Pull the plug, and get rid of the illegals..now, that is what we voted for...

I have a bad feeling that Trump is gonna cave and grant “amnesty” to the DACA slugs, in exchange for wall funding, that will never happen. (mexico was put on notice they would pay for the wall)...all kabuki, all the time.

I honestly don’t think President Trump is the least bit worried about that.

Obama was able to take down Romney with a sly whispering campaign that convinced people that he was a dog-abusing polygamist who shipped jobs to India and went around giving people cancer.

Trump’s approach will be much more direct.

I can't believe that I voted for--and worked hard for--the election of Romney, McCain, and both Bushes.

NEVER AGAIN!

I have a bad feeling that Trump is gonna cave and grant “amnesty” to the DACA slugs, in exchange for wall funding, that will never happen. (mexico was put on notice they would pay for the wall)...all kabuki, all the time.

Any deal on DACA is fraught with contentious details. Let's say that Trump is using DACA as a bargaining chip to get money for the wall, end chain migration, get mandatory e-verify, and eliminate the visa lottery program. As someone who has worked on the immigration issue for ten years lobbying on the Hill, I would take such a deal as much as it pains me to grant permanent legalization to DACA recipients.

There are many Reps who want to make a deal on DACA. The polls show that the public is sympathetic to the perceived plight of the "children" who were "brought here by their parents." The reality is that there is nothing in the DACA rules that requires one to be brought here by their parents. You can come here unaccompanied and get DACA, which is why we had that huge flood of unaccompanied children two years ago. Many of them were not children and it is difficult to verify their ages. Here are the rules on DACA:

You may request consideration of DACA if you:

Were under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012;

Came to the United States before reaching your 16th birthday;

Have continuously resided in the United States since June 15, 2007, up to the present time;

Were physically present in the United States on June 15, 2012, and at the time of making your request for consideration of deferred action with USCIS;

Had no lawful status on June 15, 2012, meaning that:

You never had a lawful immigration status on or before June 15, 2012, or

Any lawful immigration status or parole that you obtained prior to June 15, 2012, had expired as of June 15, 2012;

Are currently in school, have graduated or obtained a certificate of completion from high school, have obtained a General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or are an honorably discharged veteran of the Coast Guard or Armed Forces of the United States; and

Have not been convicted of a felony, a significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors, and do not otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety.

Striking a deal on DACA will be difficult. The devil is in the details. Here are some of the issues that must be resolved:

Who will be covered by the deal? Will it just be those who have received DACA status (800,000) or will it include the estimated 3 million who are eligible but did not apply?

Will legalization include a path to citizenship?

Will the legalized DACA recipients be able to sponsor relatives including parents? The average DACA recipient is now 29 years old.

The Dems are being pressured by various immigration group allies that any deal involving the Dreamers must also include the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in the country. How will that affect the Dem vote if the deal is limited to the Dreamers?

IMO it will be very difficult to strike a deal on the Dreamers. The March deadline will put additional pressure to come up with a deal. Trump has the leverage in these negotiations. The Dems will have to explain why they are against securing the borders, ensuring that Americans and legal immigrants have their jobs protected, eliminating the visa lottery program, and keeping chain migration. If the Dems torpedo the deal because they are against these things, then they will have a lot of explaining to do.
