California's hidden homeless: Teachers, chefs, nurses and other middle class workers living in cars
Daily Mail ^ | December 26, 2017 | Emily Crane

The rising cost of rent and housing in California is forcing residents into alternative accommodation with middle class workers taking up residence in their cars and RVs by the side of the road to make ends meet.

Hundreds of people, including nurses and chefs, are sleeping in parking lots in affluent areas like Santa Barbara as they make the most of the only homes they can afford.

Marva Ericson, who works as a nursing assistant, has been sleeping in her Kia for the past three months. She wakes up before dawn each day, showers at the local YMCA and dresses in her hospital scrubs to head to work.

'I wake up and I say, 'Thank you God for keeping me safe last night, and thank you for the Safe Parking program',' the 48-year-old told the LA Times.

Like Ericson, most of the people sleeping rough in their cars are part of the area's Safe Parking program, which is run by the New Beginnings Counseling Center and aims to provide a secure area for the homeless to sleep in their vehicles.

The program has roughly 150 clients and 40 per cent of those are working but they just can't afford an apartment with the rising cost of housing.

About 35 per cent of those in the program are seniors and about 30 per cent are disabled. The majority are living out of their small cars with only 25 per cent sleeping in RVs.

if all the illegal aliens in California were suddenly deported and no new ones allowed in, the labor shortage would be so intense that wages would skyrocket, and these middle-class workers would no longer have to live in their cars ...

You’re absolutely right. The skill level and salaries are very different. Calling a nursing assistant a nurse is so wrong.

In Los Angeles, the median salary of RN’s (who are also probably MSNs or DNSc) at large companies or hospitals, is between 80k and 98k. Nursing assistants make a fraction of that.

They couldn’t find any way to blame it on Trump? The media is slipping.

Also, with 10 million fewer people, there would no longer be a housing shortage.

Well, when you FLOOD the state with people, and this People compete with available rent spaces, something happens. What could that be now? I wonder...

“I don’t see a big societal collapse from people living out of cars or RVs.”

Ever seen the movie “Americathon?”

You can bet California has to have a law against this.

I’ve seen some cute little micro-campers made out of things like Ford Transits.

VW invented the RV (not to mention the van) with the VW microbus cargo van. It was converted to an efficient camper by Westfalia.

It created its own culture.

It gives me great pleasure to know that sealed federal indictments are stacking up all over the country in record numbers and that California had the most as of this November list. Oh and the list has grown as more sealed indictments stack up so I am hoping California’s has doubled in quantity. Here’s the list by state:

Yep. Rent control laws, strict zoning laws, high property taxes, Section 8, etc. All these lead to shortages. No landlord is going to lease at or below cost.

It doesn’t matter if you have a roommate or 10. There is no supply of apartments.

Want to make liberals heads explode - ask them how many of the homeless are Asian?

Want to make them really explode - ask them about developing housing on the central coast of California.

On many levels the article itself is stupid and the people within more so. How far California and America has fallen.

just going by what the article says... "Hundreds of people, including nurses and chefs, are sleeping in parking lots in affluent areas like Santa Barbara as they make the most of the only homes they can afford. "

also they have vehicles so they don't have to live in the city

not to mention get rid of the illegals to free up housing for Americans
