Stephanie Lugardos second-grade classroom at Academia Antonia Alonso in Wilmington, Delaware, is bubbling. Smiles break out on an array of faces, and the chatter spills out in English and Spanish.
This is an incarnation of a new American pluralism, one of the latest iterations of Walt Whitmans teeming nation of nations flowering in their curiosity and welcome of novelty. Downstairs, in a kindergarten class, an African American student exclaims to her friend, I know how to say that in Spanish!
José Aviles, the head of Academia Antonia Alonso, describes the school as a sort of multicultural nirvana. We tell parents, Your kid is going to be surrounded by Latino kids, white kids, African American kidswe offer everyone the same education, the same quality, the same love, he told me.
Academia Antonia Alonso, which opened as a public charter school in 2014, was designed to meet the needs of a linguistically diverse population. School leaders took full advantage of the flexibility allowed to charters to launch whats known as a dual-immersion program: Children learn in both English and Spanish and, ideally, become fully bilingual in the process. The students switch languages each school dayif a class runs in English on Tuesday, it switches to Spanish on Wednesday. (With some exceptions: For example, all the schools capoeira classes are usually in Spanishwith a smattering of Portuguese.) The program also balances the linguistic makeup of each class of students through its enrollment process. About a third of the schools children are formally recognized as English learners (ELs), students who are still developing basic proficiency in that language. Nearly two-thirds of the schools students are Latino, while around half of those enrolled are native Spanish speakers; the other half are native English speakers.

Man, the world is just going to be a happy & wondrous place once Whitey is gone.
The very fact that Spanish is a White Indo-European language created by Whites just slips past their minds...LOL!
Agreed.
Otherwise, they're simply creating another generation of chronically-unemployed manual laborers.
Ah well: no matter how high-tech our society becomes, we'll still need maids, dishwashers, ditch-diggers...
The la raza crowd does not want latinos to integrate at all. They just hate it when they find out that some gringo can speak their bastardized verzion of spanish. There’s a few mexicans where I work. Whenever they get together, they instantly break out with the spanish. I sit and listen to them. If the gringos around them understood what they were saying, they would be skinned alive and burned.
We also have a couple of Puerto Ricans working there. They can’t stand the mexican dialect of spanish. They also don’t like what the mexicans talk about. It’s funny when one of the mexicans tries to converse with one of the Puerto Ricans in spanish. The Puerto Ricans basically tell them to STFU and speak in English.
[Just another vapid article trotting another obscure phenomena to blame on white, natural-born, U.S. citizens.]
It’s what a liberal lives for. Sometime, reality pops (in a harsh way) into their little fantasy bubble.

[Some liberals, most of which are ego-soaked, look for ways to support their self-perceived importance so they champion imaginary causes for that purpose, Newburn said. They are adult-children who feel free to construct fantasies about their greatness. Their narcissism in part functions to blind them to inconvenient realities. So to compensate, they idealize the targets of their misdirected and pathological caring.”]
They will not like the Obama-world they dedicated their lives to.
They will wake up to it, one day. Far too late and with no way to turn it around.
Oops! Thank you for the correction.
Growing up in two or more languages, especially very different languages like English and Korean actually helps in all subjects in school. It gives you more than one pathway of thought.
We’re “white”but everyone else has a culture. Everyone else was a heritage.
John McWhorter says that historically most people were at least bilingual. He says that our current situation where most Americans only speak one language is an aberration.
My wife is a native Spanish speaker. We made sure our kids grew up speaking both languages.
I used to be a teacher and while this sounds good, I’m not convinced the kids are getting any real academic content.
They know nothing about history, government, logic, etc..just a skim coat of everything.
They are multicult playtoys nothing more
Agreed, their entitlement is mind boggling.
Militant Latinos yearning for their conquest of the USA, most speaking Spanglish and knowing nothing but anger. Go to a heavily Latino section of L.A. or Houston to see what the country will look like if they succeed.
Meanwhile, German companies like VW conduct their business in English.
The son of a friend of mine has a very lucrative consulting business in Korea, advising Asians on how to interact with English speaking businessmen.
An English speaker appropriating Spanish for himself is what is racist. //s
In some societies men and women speak entirely different languages and men are bilingual. Most of the women are not.
Were whitebut everyone else has a culture. Everyone else was a heritage.

If it had not been for “white culture” most of them would have no language or culture.
And Democratic voters.
