But there was never anything posted that was more concrete than wild speculation by conservative bloggers and talking heads. I don't think I even remember seeing a media report citing "unnamed sources" on that one.

Please forgive me for taking everything I read here with a huge pile of skepticism.
When the idea of firing Sessions was floated, a gang of Senate Republicans threatened to impeach Trump, if he did.
I dont think the President is happy with Sessions at all. There have been lots of indicators over the last nine months which attest to that.
Sessions just needs to resign if he feels honor bound to stay out of this.
there are people who feel the same who can and will do something about this.

Notice the criticism of Trump by Luther Strange -- who ended up getting Trump's endorsement in the Alabama Senate primary a couple of months later.
I think a lot of Freepers would do well to step back and realize that most of what they see from Trump is pure (and effective) theatrics.
The threat to Trump went beyond just vowing that he’d get no replacement AG. He was told explicitly, by his own party, that “all hell would break loose.” Iirc, it was Graham who suggested impeachment would not be off the table. Couple that with what the hysterical, hair-on-fire MSM/Democrats would do, and it’s enough to give a circumspect person pause.
Above his level? Who, besides the Congress, is above the Attorney General, in the legal arena?
Suggest you reread Trump’s criticism of Sessions. There was nothing theatrical about it.

Sessions has destroyed any pretense of “HONOR”. He planned to get the AG job with other politicians. They knew all these situations were a possibility. He has never been any help to Trump. He is in hiding and holding out all hope to save the Swamp. In the end I hope he is criminally charged with Treason and Obstruction.

The speed with which Sessions ***unnecessarily*** recused and Rosenstein appointed Mueller was breathtaking. The tag team of Sessions and bff Rosenstein clearly didn’t want to give Trump sufficient time to react to Sessions’ backstabbing recusal before getting dirty Mueller firmly in place.

Well there is a serious vacuum in the heads of most of our elected officials. There is such a massive void inside most of their heads that if you dropped a heavy object on any one of their heads it would be just like dropping a rock on an old Cathode Ray TV tube. It would be an implosion!
Most Republican senators didn’t want Sessions as AG, so why would they threaten Trump with impeachment for firing him?
This has been explained idk how many times. There was a widespread belief that Sessions was fully onboard to help Trump drain the swamp. The same actions on Sessions’ part that infuriated Trump concomitantly reassured the swamp that they had nothing to fear from Sessions; he would protect them to the full extent of his powers. That’s when Trump became anti-Sessions and the swamp became militantly pro-Sessions.
