Here is the path the plane took showing the spot where it turned around. The official explanation is that one of the passengers got on the wrong plane but I'm not buying it. Even if a passenger did manage to get on the wrong plane, you don't let one person's mistake ruin the flight for all the other passengers.

Four hours out and four hours back!

There was somebody on that plane that the U.S. did not want getting to Tokyo.

No it was likely somebody that Tokyo would not allow entry.

Likely a Muslim cleric. Japan does not allow entry to Muslim jihad advocates.

***************************

Officially, immigration to Japan is not closed to Muslims. But the number of the immigration permits given to the applicants from Islamic countries is very low. Obtaining a working visa is not easy for adepts of Islam, even if they are physicians, engineers and managers sent by foreign companies that are active in the region. As a result, Japan is a country without Muslims.

There is no reliable estimate on the Japanese Muslim population. However, claims of thirty thousand made by some researchers are without doubt an exaggeration. Some claim that there are only a few hundred. This probably amounts to the number of Muslims openly practicing Islam. Asked to give an estimate on the actual number of Muslims in Japan, the ex-president of the Japan Islamic Association Abu Bakr Morimoto replied, “To say frankly, only one thousand. In the broadest sense, I mean, if we do not exclude those who became Muslims for the sake of, say marriage, and do not practice then the number would be a few thousand.”

Four hours out and four hours back!

I'm sure there are folks here who can comment on this better than me... but my understanding is that not all commercial aircraft can dump fuel. Therefore the only option to get the weight down for landing purposes is to do circles until enough fuel is burnt off.... In this case, it might have been 8 hours but it could have been much more, I think....

I’ll bet it busted the flight crew’s duty day. If I were dispatching it, if I didn’t have an airport reserve, I’d have put the crew to bed and delayed the flight to however much time I need the crew’s duty time to reset, 12 hours, maybe?

And I like to know how the misboard happened..

You know, Japan is very strict on entry by people not allowed. Is there anywhere else they could have gone, if Japan demanded such a person not be allowed in their country?

Or could it be due to Japanese rules on security, having accurate passenger flight manifests, and the like?

“Here is the path the plane took showing the spot where it turned around.”

Considering that Japan is pretty much exactly west of Los Angeles, I can see why they turned back - they would have ended up somewhere in Siberia if they kept going that way.
