Consider the central puzzle to Trump's presidency: why did his own people give NeverTrumps a special counsel?
The most common explanation is that Trump is a bumbling fool. First, he colluded with Russia. Then he appointed Sessions, not knowing that Sessions would recuse himself. Finally, he appointed Rosenstein and was blindsided by the initiation of Mueller's probe.
The problem with this idea is that Trump has been a successful person for decades, building an empire in the cutthroat world of New York real estate. Maybe it's possible to argue that Trump isn't a Harvard bookworm, but there is an enormous gulf between not being the second coming of Henry David Thoreau and being what Trump's opponents say he is. His record simply does not countenance a serious conclusion in accord with his haters. At worst, he is merely competent, smart, and wily.
One of Trump's favorite quotes is "A leader has the right to be beaten, but never the right to be surprised." The idea that two independent Trump nominations to the most important parts of his administration immediately acted in tandem to undermine his presidency is not believable.
Some Trump-supporters have a different theory: that Mueller is actually on Trump's side, a "converted spy," as Imperator_Rex would write. Mueller is a Marine veteran who wants to support the American people but was forced into being Obama and Hillary's agent. Trump knows that Mueller will do what is right when given the chance. The investigation will boomerang back against Democrats.
Though this is a thought-provoking theory that accepts the premise that Trump is fundamentally a competent actor, it also fails. Mueller's character was definitively established when, as FBI director, he oversaw the Anthrax Letters investigation to find out who mailed anthrax, weeks after 9/11

Now, this is believable. Trump’s a counter puncher and this is entirely his style.
Not optimistic about Mueller....I think he is CORRUPT as the day is long!! he let the Clintons skip on a ton of things.
Wow!! A really good article. Thanks for finding and posting it.
bkmk
I agree that Mueller is corrupt, but what if he was offered immunity to take out the bad guys? Don’t get me wrong. I don’t trust him, but he might want to protect himself and his reputation more than he hates Trump. We will see.
It has been suggested that Trump made Mueller an “offer he couldn’t refuse” to ensure his cooperation.
I don’t know, but it’s certainly possible.
I object that notion. It's not 'many' it's some. Most are perfectly fine with Trump's twitter media war and so far loyalty from the inspector general. If you ask me, switching from attack mode to turtling up and issuing public denials is a loser of an idea.
Good thing Trumps not a loser and I don't think he's going to start issuing public denials. His attacks are public denials unto themselves.
Trump is a sharp businessman, but not infallible. He’s great at recovering from errors, but he has made them both in his career and during the campaign. I also don’t see his top confederates taking the approach described in the article. If Sessions would allow himself to be portrayed as an incompetent boob by Trump publicly, I’d be surprised.
I do appreciate the writer throwing the idea out there for discussion.
Trump channels Sun Tzu.
Works for me.
Mueller could be like that Willem Dafoe character
The mob boss hired him to assassinate John Wick
He took the job but at every opportunity he was saving John Wick from being killed
Could Mueller really be that guy? That is why he hired all these Democratic HACKS to make Democrats believe he is really going at TRUMP hard!
Makes for a good movie but I doubt it! LOL
# 8: absolutely brilliant insights and truth!
I detect a military approach to Trumps actions that seed chaos with the enemy.
“Trump knows that Mueller will do what is right when given the chance. The investigation will boomerang back against Democrats.”....
Part of the investigation has shown a bit of a “bommerang” but if Mueller is such a great “plant” within the demodummie’s party consider the political donations made to the Clinton camp PRIOR to the election. I don’t trust the guy one bit!!
As the author of the article developed his argument, I wondered the dame. Where is a majority of such confederates that could/predictably would prevent a broad attempt to remove him from office?
Well, one might start with Pence, but where does one go from there back into the swamp to find Trump loyalists there?
I agree with you completely.
The idea that two independent Trump nominations to the most important parts of his administration immediately acted in tandem to undermine his presidency is not believable.Sure it is. The author misses the simplest explanation of all. Nearly every establishment Republican was against Trump. Simply by jumping on the Trump train early, Sessions became the inside man -- the Trojan horse. Trump naively appointed Sessions because he thought Sessions was loyal. We now know that both establishment Republicans and the Democrat campaign invented the Russia collusion story and used it immediately after the election to box Trump in. Sessions is the person who executed the boxing in.
The mainstream media are forced to black it out.
The media are not FORCED to do anything. They want to bring Trump down as much as do the Dems and the never Trumpers.
Simple explanations are always best.
Yes, and the best explanation in this instance is what we already know. Republicans and Democrats were working behind the scenes to first try to stop Trump, and when that failed, to try to box him in and control him. The Dems want to go further and impeach him on any excuse.
dame same
What a crock. "Imperator Rex" is almost certainly a deep state plant tricking conservatives into blindly trusting Mueller, if you want to talk about who's being tricked. As always, these claims all always absent of facts, and based purely on fantasy to deceive those looking for a conspiracy everywhere.
Their latest BS is that those on the Trump team who have been arrested are actually happy about it, because they're all in on the plan. Yeah right.
False dichotomy. Trump merely wants to restore the rule of law and saw Sessions as the man to do that. Trump is not looking for political vengeance or political kills. Too many people have taken "lock her up" too literally. The Trump rally rhetoric and Trump tweets are what he says. What he does overwhelmingly is restore the rule of law and the balance of power, undoing the overreach of Obama and prior presidents.
Remember, the meat is the reformation of the Society of Jurists, not so much the coherence of the Executive, or Constitutionality of the Legislature.
Right now, impeachment is a somber prospect, but could be averted by an immediate concerted appeal of amplified voices to one's local Representative(s). Eh?
