Object on tracks may be cause of deadly Amtrak derailment

Monday’s deadly Amtrak train derailment appears to have been caused by an object on the railway, according to a government official briefed on the crash.

A preliminary investigation suggests maintenance problems are unlikely to blame because the incident took place on brand-new tracks, the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

At least six people were killed and the death toll is expected to rise, the official said.

Tough to say.

The normal consist of those trains apparently has a powered locomotive on the Southbound end and a Control Cab on the North end. (So that would be pulled on this trip.)

This train seems to have had a powered loco on the front (southbound) and an Amtrak P42 powered locomotive on the rear (for some reason).

So there are all sorts of combinations of motive power input to this train.

Hopefully they can query the data loggers.

Max speed for the entire road was 79 mph. Not sure on the speed restriction for that location. Prelim reports say 35mph before the curve.

The TV coverage has shown that the line has had very recent, extensive rework of the right of way and road bed. The article says new track.

Captain Obvious strikes again!

What is your point? Trains derail all the time without striking objects on the track, usually due to operational or maintenance difficulties.

This stinks of sabotage, and if we find the cretin he should be hanged without delay. But's probably some antifa activist and the judge will give him a slap on the back and a tenured faculty position.

Check out the rail “alignment” as it goes over the bridge in the last pic of #24.

My first thought.

The commie scum are already on record doing things to railroad tracks.

Besides them there’s just other SJW nitwits and Muslims who seem likely perpetrators.

Leftists and Enviros love passenger trains.

I would look at foreign philosophies.

Why would ANTIFA attack a train in the Seattle-Portland corridor? Did they think Trump would be on it?

They shut down Freight Trains 80 miles south of this incident.

Those trains were moving fracking materials from the port of Longview, inland along the Columbia River corridor.

Check out the rail “alignment”...

Gradual sweeping curve on what was a two rail bridge. All new track.

They will be able to query the data loggers. I did some logger housing design work for one of the freight rail companies and the requirements were very robust.

In the better picture on this thread I could see the loco is the one that barrelled down the embankment and spread all of the debris so it was going left to right.

Must have looked like the scene from The Fugitive.

This is clearly an act of terrorism.

Based on what, exactly?

From the pictures, it appears that the derailment probably started several dozen (or hundred) yards before the overpass and it got out of control by the time it got to the intersecting road. I wonder what the chances are of a train derailing right at the intersection with a road? I wonder how many hundreds of miles the train passed before derailing so close to an EASY ACCESS POINT?

If a train track were to be sabotaged, I would assume that it would occur several dozen (or hundred) yards off of a road that would allow the criminals easy access and then easy escape after planting the impediment.

BINGO!

Looks like someone was doing a good job on engineering/build. The track is also banked there.
