Hiroshima atomic bombing survivor Setsuko Thurlow and International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) leader Beatrice Fihn on Saturday urged the United States and North Korea to negotiate and avoid nuclear war.

On Sunday, the two will receive this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Thurlow, 85, was 13 years old at the time of the Hiroshima bombing.

"No human being should suffer what we suffered," Thurlow told reporters Saturday. "I deeply and strongly urge the leaders of North Korea and the U.S. never to use nuclear weapons ... Negotiate....

You cannot negotiate with an insane dictator.

You kill them.

Broken Arrow opines that she’s a fraud. But how about hedging your bets, in case she’s genuine, and calling her “useful” or some similar euphemism.

Actually, you can. Just convince them that you will make a gorilla cookie out of their face if they mess with you, and they’ll suddenly be the voice of reason. That’s what Trump’s doing. If he ran casinos, he knows how to play poker.

You mean, North Korea has an extensive navy with carriers and submarines and a modern air force, along with a large army? North Korea has already invaded and conquered which territories? North Korea is a threat, not an active combatant.

Trump won the negotiating already, by getting the PRC on board to squeeze rocket man in exchange for favorable trade relations, and by calling him “rocket man”. It’s just a matter of time. The US can always blow him sky high. Being a super power, you get to do that, which means you don’t have to just yet.

Before and during WWII the Japanese emporer was believed to be a god by the populace. None but the highest military and civilians ever entered his presence.
No commoner had ever seen their emperor or even heard his voice on the radio.

Even though the Kim family of dictators have made speeches and are seen on television and at functions they have taken on the god cloak.

A god figure can not negotiate.
They can only be destroyed.

When China chokes off their supplies and markets, and Donald starts making clear to him what the US can do, he’ll start backing off slowly to save face. He’s started that already, in fact, saying that now North Korea’s nuclear arsenal is complete; in other words, no more tests. He’ll keep the god thing going, but North Korea doesn’t have a long tradition of godhood myths for their leader, as Japan did, nor any empire worth speaking of. So what’s he going to do with it?

Hiroshima was an excellent place to demonstrate the atomic bomb.
The USA tested the Trinity Bomb July 16, 1945. The Japanese tested their own atomic bomb in late February 1945 in Hungnam, Korea, about 4-1/2 months before us. Their bomb was about 1/10th the size of ours and they used up all their atomic fuel in the one test with nothing to spare.
If they’d been able to get more uranium they would have destroyed an American city with it.
To aid in the Japanese effort, Germany shipped 560 kg (1,230 lb) of unprocessed uranium oxide to Japan in April 1945 aboard the submarine U-234, which surrendered to an American destroyer soon after the German defeat and so Japan never received the uranium.

“No human being should suffer what we suffered,” I’m sure the Chinese would agree. Remember Nanking.

It is the Japanese Emperor’s fault. If Pearl Harbor had not been bombed I rather doubt we would have gone do war with Japan.
And don’t get me going on how the military establishment lied to him, etc. The buck stop’s with the top guy/gal.
Of course, alternative histories are tricky.
BTW - can you tell me what suffering any human should have to experience? By definition suffering is something we would like to avoid.

They stopped testing because they blew up their test facility and most likely their top talent. Remember their test facility collapsing?

China now has a problem they didn’t forsee.
A nuclear armed North Korea that is controlled by a complete and utter madman. I think the present generation of the Kim dynasty is very unstable. His father and grandfather could be guided, to a degree, by China. Young Kim is off the lunatic scale and facing something he never considered, a strong American President who isn’t going to play the game.

The NORKS have been brainwashed COMPLETELY for three generations. No outside news is allowed in.
Radio Free America?
The average NORK citizen doesn’t have a radio.
Their language and culture have drifted far off the Korean trail. North and South are now incompatible linguistically and culturally.
Stockholm Syndrome takes weeks. The Kim family has been at it decades.

Norklandia is led by a little tin god who believes his own press.
He executes those he deems problematic with artillery guns.
He had his half brother executed.
He fed his uncle to starving dogs!
Does anyone trust such a person to make a rational decision?
Does anyone think he will suffer to lose face in front of his generals?

If lil’ Kim feels his Hermit Kingdom falling around his feet he may decide to take the rest of the world with him. I can see him launching nukes at China, Russia and the US to make maximum misery on his way out.

If Hitler, hiding in his bunker, had nukes available, don’t you think he would have launched on everyone he could reach?
Fat Kim is the same level of insane.
And he DOES have nukes.

OK. So in the interim, unless Norkia bombs something, what they are doing is threatening, not attacking, so they are not comparable to Japan, which had already attacked plenty by the time of Pearl Harbor. The best way to get them to stop is to squeeze them. Trump has taken steps to do so, enlisting Norkia’s patron, the PRC, also showing that he’s not intimidated by calling him “rocket man” and threatening to turn Norkia into sheet glass if they attack the US, Guam, Japan or Soukia. I’m all for it. This is negotiating that makes sense.

The “negotiating” that Ms. Radiation Burn is talking about is part of the problem, because it’s been tried.

Well, then, there’s one other option. Send in Soukian spies to reach members of the Norkian military that are alarmed at the state of things, and worried about their own survival. Cultivate them, equip them with what they need. And have them positioned to take the little prick out while Trump tries “negotiating” his way, just in case it works. If little Kim doesn’t seem interested in his offers, one quick shot to the head, and some other, saner prick gets to be dear leader.

Again, there are the linguistic and cultural problems. I have heard it is the smallest of things that get spies caught.
If infiltration is successful which officer would be willing to place not only his own life in danger but the lives of his grandparents, parents, children, in-laws, cousins, etc.?
Unlike here they all watch each other like hawks. Hungry, ravenously hungry hawks. It’s a place where you get ahead by outing your superiors/peers.

Rocket boy has disposed of anyone who would be willing to take him out. By anti-aircraft fire and hungry dogs He is holding his generals by the short hairs. They are afraid to fart.

That itself makes him ripe for a coup. You scare your underlings too much, and they start to believe they have to take you out, that they and their entire families are already forfeit, and if not today, tomorrow, so they may as well go for it.

I can’t say I know Nork from Souk. But I’m sure that Soukia has its own intelligence agency, and they have specially trained agents who can pass for Nork. They are probably already in place, and are probably working on turning key military personnel as we speak.

The wildcard might be his sister. Apparently she and rocket boy are very close and she holds some power in his government. How much is up to debate.
She could be a moderating force that keeps lil’ Kim just this side of full on koo koo.
She could also be one who keeps the generals in line.
Or she could be the one pulling kimmies strings and making his do his crazy act.

A couple of things about a coup.
The Kim family has assumed the status of god-hood. The average citizen believes it and can conceive of nothing else.
How do you replace a god?
Can a god be assassinated?
Can a god be imprisoned?
Lose the god and lose the nation. What remains of their society would collapse and be more unstable than now.

Funny thing about elites the world over is they never believe they will be the one who go against the wall for the firing squad.
The man (or woman) who rats out someone today determines to be more vigilant than those they replace, thinking their vigilance will protect them. Until it doesn’t.
Stalin used the same tactics to keep himself in power.

Between a starving populace, a hungry military and the select well fed elites lil’ Kim is safe from a domestic coup.
Maybe, just maybe, China could intervene and depose lil’ Kim and replace him with his sister. That is probably the best bet at this time.
If Kimmie gets a hint of an idea that might happen then sis is dog chow.

When thinking about North Korea I keep two things in mind.
1. “East is east, west is west and ne’er the twain shall meet.”
The eastern and western minds (especially Americans) don’t think alike and are basically foreign to each other.

2. In North Korea there are too many unknown unknowns.
