Embattled NBC executives have been falling over themselves insisting they had no idea about Matt Lauer’s pervy past. But if anyone doubts that New York’s media elite was aware of Lauer’s reputation, they should look no further than a top-secret “roast” of Lauer that took place in October 2008.
The notorious event -- now legendary in New York media circles -- pushed the outer limits of sexist, racist, homophobic and obscene jokes -- and left little doubt that Lauer’s colleagues knew NBC’s biggest star had a troubled marriage and a wandering eye.
Last week, NBC’s own Joe Scarborough, who attended the roast but said he left early, feeling uncomfortable, brought it up on “Morning Joe.” Lauer’s peccadillos, he said, were not just known about. At the roast, they were celebrated.
“The whole theme was that he does the show and then he has sex with people, with employees,” Scarborough said. “So was this whispered behind closed doors? No. It was shouted from the mountaintops and everybody laughed about it.”

It seems to me that there are two ways to take the jokes—one way would be to presume that all or most of the extramarital sex alluded to is hyperbole, and the other is that all or most of it is true...
What Lauer has done to his wife and children is unforgivable.

But it sounds like rich Romans at an orgy, and when everyone is spent they all agree to go `public face’ to the forum in order to offer pious bird sacrifices to the gods. I think back to seeing Matt Lauer on TV and it was like he was wearing a mask.

I worked in a 6 person Christian radio station in Albany. We were all “so devout”.
The station manager who thought she was the holiest wore short skirts and no undies because her husband liked that.
The angel-voiced producer came in with a hangover every morning.
The star DJ was Catholic and that would have disgusted the audience so that had to be hidden.
The engineer was a whack job who would stand on the desk in the other studio and moon the DJ during prayer time.
The saleswoman was a homeless alcoholic with serious mental issues.
And instead of playing what was playing on the station in the office the DJ and engineer blasted Queen and the like.
Fun times. No, really, FUN times. We were not awful people by any means, just not quite as nice aa we made out.
Not to mention the regional sales guys were absolute snakes from the pit of Hell. The advertisers took advantage of the audience because the Christian listeners wanted to support the station, so they were treated like fish in a barrel. I even got rope-a-doped by one of them.
ANYWAY, THAT is when I learned to not think of personalities as wondrous creatures who represent their true selves in the public image. I’d never realized the depth of deception before that.

Yes, it was. Aretha Franklin sang God Bless America and other guests were Martha Stewart, Tom Cruise and Gilbert Gotfried and a lot of others. It wasn’t that funny as I recall. My husband doesn’t remember Scarborough being there either.
At some point this is all going to blow over and be replaced by some other story, and 99% of the pervs will be left unscathed. They will congratulate themselves for cleaning up their profession, and 99.9% of their audience will applaud them.

I only feel for kids having parents like these two selfish greedy people. no matter their ages, it’s sad to have to realize your mom was more interested in money than in doing the right thing for all concerned and your dad wasn’t interested in providing a good example of how to act like an honorable man and treat women properly.

I don’t remember. To be honest, it wasn’t all that memorable. Neil Simon was there, I remember. It’s a Friar’s Roast which is notoriously dirty. It was once a stag party until Gloria Allred sued and the Club was opened up to women - which is how I ended up there. Most of the members at the Friars are garmentos.
