Playoff Chair Says 'Alabama Was Clearly The No. 4 Team' And It Wasn't That Close (College football)
Business Insider ^ | 12-3-2017 | Cork Gaines

The College Football Playoff committee has spoken and Alabama is in over Ohio State as the fourth team and will play Clemson in the Sugar Bowl semifinal.

Bama-vs.-Ohio State was debated heavily following the conference championship games on Saturday. Ohio State had a conference championship and more impressive wins. But they also had something Alabama did not have, a second loss, an ugly 33-point debacle against Iowa.

The decision was also controversial because it means this year's playoff will have no teams from the Big Ten and the Pac-12. Instead, it will have two teams from the SEC, including one team that did not reach their conference championship game.

Listening to playoff committee chairman Kirby Hocutt, it sounds like the Buckeyes' loss to Iowa may have sealed their fate even before the conference championship games.

"We compared [Alabama's resume] to a 2-loss Ohio State team, obviously that one loss at home to No. 2-ranked Oklahoma," Hocutt said on ESPN. "But more damaging was the 31-point loss to unranked Iowa."

Conference championships are supposed to be a bit of a tiebreaker if the teams are considered otherwise equal. In this case, the committee did not view the teams as equals.

exactly! Come and play in the SEC and see what head-to-head results anyone can get, much less a low loss record.

“No one outside the south cares for SEC football.”

and we don’t care about those east/west coast wannabees either... weak schedule wins mean nothing to the SEC.

“They have a Junior High Cup Cake Schedule.”

That is the most farcical thing written tonite.
The SEC West is KNOWN for high quality & high ranking teams.
Those ranking during the year are no joke.
And the defenses of the SEC West send a helluva lot of players to the NFL.

Most of the Bowls being in the South doesn’t help either.

If OSU beats Wisky by more than 2 TDs, they probably would have gotten in over Bama.

Two might not have done it, but 3+ probably would have. OSU needed dominance, and they didn't get it. They were certainly capable of it somewhere in their Jeckle and Hyde personality. A Wisconsin win would have left Alabama out, too.

I was hoping I could put my Bama hate away for the season, but it survived for another couple of weeks.

They are probably thinking “If only we had scheduled a couple of powerhouses like Mercer and Vandy.

I like your proposal, but it would have to have 8 teams, not 6, to be workable. I also like the way they do it for California CIF high school championships. 12 teams get in; the first 4 seeds get a bye; the 5-12 play each other, and the winners of those 4 games play the first 4 seeds the second week. It gives the top teams a benefit for being highest rated, while still giving the lower seeds a chance to play in the playoffs and maybe pull off an upset.

I think the top 12 college teams could probably beat each other, and so would make for an interesting playoff system for the fans. This year, you’d have Miami, Ohio State, Auburn, Wisconsin, et al. playing each other and then there would be good games against the top 4. It would add one week to an 8 team system, but I think with 12 it fixes most of the politics in the selection. Of course, a few left off would still be complaining, but that will always happen. Happens in basketball with 64 teams.

The East and West coast is where the TV audience is and they won’t be watching the fake championship.

Who the heck is Mercer?

If you think about it, if you have conference championship games, it’s really a 10-team playoff, adding in the two at-large teams, that makes it 12.

The SEC could also do something like this. Have the best Division winner automatically get into the Championship game. But have the other Division winner have to play the next best team in the conference to get to the Conference Championship Game. There are a bunch of things the conferences can do on their own to essentially create a bigger playoff.

That would work, too. I just think 4 is too small, 16 or more is too big. No. 16 is too far removed from the top teams. I like 8 or 12, or your system.

HA! My major complaint when I see a FSU game, too! That stupid chant, over and over, is more irritating than bad calls by the officials!

Alright, Mr. Statistician. I'll buy in when you show me the last time Alabama had a 31 point loss to an unranked opponent. I'll help you out a little, just because I get into research. I've gone back to 1931 and I haven't found such an Alabama loss. You can pick it up from there.

The fact is, yes, Ohio State had better wins, I'll fully admit. But they also have more and worse losses. I don't think you fully realize how catastrophic that Iowa loss was.

You could of put in

Wisconsin
Ohio St.
Penn St.
Georgia

And when Georgia wins it the big ten would of still complained that it was rigged for the SEC.

Sabin is a great strategist. One of the best I have seen in football at any level.

If you think he hasn’t at least thought about it, you would be mistaken.

Losing in the SEC championship game would risk getting froze out of the playoff completely. Losing to Auburn means he has a decent chance of getting in.

Still, it is all speculation. However such things are done in the pros all the time (if you have a playoff berth locked up, lose a game to preserve your players).

Local group had to do the same thing because no one wanted to be the Rebels.

Funny thing, the reenactment group back home had no problem having people playing the Sioux. And to be honest, the bluecoats and the local Tribes fought each other much worse than the North and South.
