First Daughter Ivanka Trump was in Hyderabad, India this week touting female entrepreneurship. Too bad she wasted the opportunity by plagiarizing much of her remarks from one of her previous speeches, Newsweek declared Wednesday in its piece, "Ivanka Trump Plagiarizes One of Her Own Speeches in India."
The Newsweek editors regretted that "the breadth of her talking points were recycled from a previous speech she gave during a foreign trip earlier this month." That other "foreign trip" appears to be the one she made to Tokyo, Japan.
They pulled some specific excerpts to prove they had caught Ivanka red handed.
"When women work, it creates a unique multiplier effect," Trump said in Hyderabad, citing the same exact line from her Tokyo speech. Her words continued to mirror the speech she gave just a few weeks ago: "Women are more likely than men to hire other women, and to give them access to capital, mentorship and networks. Women are also more likely to reinvest their income back in their families and communities."
Politicians and other public figures are apt to recycle their favorite phrases, as Newsweek notes. But, the editors also suggest that Ivanka is repeating herself to promote a new World Bank initiative, which some lawmakers say is unethical.
Media pundits were quick to point out that you can't plagiarize your own words. CNN's Jake Tapper was more than happy to share the dictionary definition for Newsweek for future reference.
If its your own work, it isnt plagiarism. By definition. https://t.co/C6FZtglbex https://t.co/9yWSf4CTw5 Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 30, 2017

Since the backlash, Newsweek changed its headline and issued a correction explaining that Ivanka had "reused," not plagiarized, an earlier speech.
Oh noes! And, and, and I saw an episode of Seinfeld last night that was plagiarized from when it originally aired back in 1993!!! Jerry and Kramer had the same conversation that they had back then...word for word! This is an outrage!
Noosweak thinks you can
Ask noosweaak
You can in certain settings, such as academia, where it is usually considered unethical to submit one work in more than one place, or to incorporate significant portions of an earlier work into a later one without a proper citation. Whether or not it technically constitutes "plagiarism" more or less depends on whether you accept a definition of the term that limits it to stealing the ideas of others. Furthermore a certain amount of material recycling is permissible under fair use and frequently necessary. Even if "self-plagiarism" doesn't fit the definition of plagiarism, strictly speaking, it is still considered academic dishonesty and treated with like seriousness.
Recycling one's own speeches, on the other hand, is a different matter. Every public speaker has done it, for ever. (Ask a pastor!) I know of more than one public speaker who has a selection of lectures on various issues that he can present on request. It sounds like Newsweak is trying to impose journalistic ethical standards out of context.
Such spectacular mistakes! Usually, someone on FR, or Rush, or someone else on the Right makes a joke about what ridiculous thing they’ll do, and the next day, they do just that. This time, I can’t even think of a joke, a new extreme. Nothing! I didn’t even dream that anyone would accuse Ivanka of plagiarizing herself. We’re in totally uncharted territory here. They’re getting better at parodying themselves than we are at making fun of them. Anything goes now.

Sad that Newsweek is reduced to hiring people so inexperienced that they don’t understand that public speakers always re-use their material.
They keep on giving and giving...Sort of like a Tijuana-meal case of diarrhea.
Bol!
My answer for everything lately, “are you f______ kidding me.”
now that is plagiarism, but how can someone plagiarize them self?
that’s stupid
Can’t be done. Newsweak is mentally ill.
I give the same speech more of less every time I do a Libertyseed.
Intellectually Bankrupt through their own volition...
