I vaguely remember the NFL. When Satan (AKA JERRY JONES) fired Tom Landry the NFL died for me.
Yes, that was a tough blow.
For me it wasn’t so much that he wanted to make a change, but the classless way he went about it.
Tom Landry was an excellent coach. He was the Dallas mainstay for decades. On top of that, he was just a class act.
The way they disrespected him at the end, it was very destructive.
What I’ve noticed all too often, is a team owner will allow the talent to wane, then blame a coach for not putting together a winning season. IMO < that’s what happened to Landry.
If the owner had given Landry more talent, he would have brought in a winning season.
I live in California. I was still a Dallas fan. It was coach Landry that was responsible for that. He and his star quarterbacks in the 60s through the 90s, were just stellar.
My only NFL game viewed in person was in the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas around 1966. I liked Dallas then, and I continued to follow them even though I moved on to California during the time I followed the team.
Never a particularly avid fan, following all the stats and the like, I still knew talent when I saw it.
