Roy Moore’s war buddy:‘I knew him to be an altogether honorable, decent..."

(The following is an open letter to the voters of Alabama from Bill Staehle of Asbury Park, New Jersey.)

I served with Roy Moore in Vietnam in 1971-72, where I knew him to be an altogether honorable, decent, respectable, and patriotic commander and soldier. I have had no contact with him since.

He and I were captains and company commanders in the 504th Military Police Battalion, stationed at the base camp called Camp Land, just west of Danang.

I knew him well in my first four months in-country before I was re-assigned within the battalion to another location. During that time, I grew to admire him.

I am Bill Staehle, residing in Asbury Park, New Jersey. I am an attorney, practicing law continuously for 42-years. I began my career as an assistant United States attorney, and for the past 32 years, I have been the managing trial lawyer for the staff counsel office of a major insurance company.

Allow me to relate to you one experience involving Roy that impressed me.

While in Vietnam, there came a time when another officer invited Roy and me to go with him into town after duty hours for a couple of beers. That officer had just returned from an assignment in Quang Tri Province north of Danang, and we were interested to learn of his experiences.

I had not met him before, and I don’t believe Roy had either. On other occasions with other officers, we would go to the officers’ club at the air force base, but on this occasion, he told us he knew of another place in town.

When we arrived at the place and went inside, it was clear to Roy and me that he had taken us to a brothel. That officer appeared to know people there, as he was greeted by one or two young women in provocative attire.

The place was plush. There were other American servicemen there. Alcohol was being served. There were plenty of very attractive young women clearly eager for an intimate time.

In less time than it took any of the women to approach us, Roy turned to me and said words to this effect, “We shouldn’t be here. I am leaving.”

We told the officer who had brought us that we wanted to leave. He told us to take his jeep and that he could get a ride back later, which he did. Roy and I drove back to camp together.

That evening, if I didn’t know it before, I knew then that with Roy Moore I was in the company of a man of great self-control, discipline, honor, and integrity. While there were other actions by Roy that reinforced my belief in him, that was the most telling.

I reject what are obvious, politically motivated allegations against Roy of inappropriate dating behavior. What I saw, felt and knew about him in Vietnam stands in stark contrast to those allegations.

I sincerely doubt that Roy’s character had changed fundamentally and dramatically in a few short years later. He deserves, in my view, to be heard on the issues that are important to the people of Alabama and our country.

Roy was a soldier for whom I was willing to put my life on the line in Vietnam if the occasion ever arose. Fortunately, it did not.

I was prepared to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him then, and I am proud to stand by Roy now.

— William E. Staehle, Asbury Park, New Jersey

Because he did, by his own admission re his future wife.

He said he remembered her from a dance recital she was in at age 15 when he met her again when she was 23!

Thanks. You are the first person I’ve seen who has explained the relationship between male/female human animals. It seems that the Lord made women’s child bearing age begin around 14 years (some younger), and young men become capable of pro-creating at around the same age. Parents try to keep their young under their guardianship as long as possible. The drive to procreate is impossible to stop of course. So men compete with each other to cull out their preferred female. Historically, they are competing with older established men who can offer financial and protective security. The helicopter parents have been winning against the natural selection process, which has prevailed since the beginning of time. I dated a lot of young boys from age 13-14 but at 19 I married a man 8 years older who was positioned to “take care of me.”

But I can’t seem to hold my tongue that XYZ non sequitur means he wasn’t interested in teens in his thirties. Because he was. Humans are flawed.

As a person who dated a 31 year old man at age 18/19 in Alabama in 1981 I can assure you that I was the one who pursued him.

We were also not an unusual couple in our circle.

I still think the seeking out of teens in the malls etc was inappropriate but he seems to have stopped upon marriage.

Mall manager says that never happened.

Young innocent American teen, really?

The young American teen girls I grew up with were far more aware of the nature of male/female interaction, (which is not to say, strictly, sex) than the boys their age, and even those a few years older. And that maturity wasn't even confined to the girls one would assume were more used to male attention.

Or perhaps I was just uniquely naive.

And the only evidence that he did is from his own words with Hannity and re meeting his future wife.

He never met her until she was 23. He had seen here in a dance recital when she was 16 or 16 and remembered her name.

Please stop repeating lies about the man.

Today, we have the age of consent as 18.

The age of consent in most states is 16, including Alabama.

Just because Moore wasn’t interested in prostitutes doesn’t mean that later he didn’t have a thing for innocent teenagers.

A "thing for innocent teenagers"?

I don't know how old you are but I am close to Judge Moore's age. When I graduated from high school in 1971, it was not unusual in the 60s and early 70s for girls to get married a few months after graduating. And when I say it was not unusual I mean that you might be invited to 3 or 4 weddings that first summer after graduation. And, she might marry a guy 10 years older than her. This means that they were dating for at least two years before they married which means they were 16 when they started dating.

So, he was not a perv for dating someone in their late teens. Also, in those days young women were a bit more mature than they are today and they looked more mature.

Another thing, before the sexual revolution the vast majority of girls honored their virginity.

Don't make the mistake of applying today's standards to those days because they cannot compare.

“thing for innocent teenagers.”

I would have let him date my daughter under the right conditions. He would have been a good catch for her. West point, Nam Vet, Lawyer. You are making way to big a deal of him dating younger women. 17 and 18 are not little girls. It would not keep me from voting for him.

By all accounts he is a good husband to his wife. His wife by the way was not a teen when they married.

Any 30 year man is interested in a 17 and 18 year woman. If not, he’s a homosexual. That he was chasing 14 year olds I don’t believe for a second.

When my grandmother married she was a teen - I think 16 but definitely an even number, in my recollection, and not 18. She married a widower whose son survived the illness which carried off his mother and sister. I don’t know how old my grandfather was, but it obviously would have been 25 at the least.

I read about Ireland that the reason they were known as “the fighting Irish” was that men didn’t marry until they inherited their fathers’ farms - and thus, functioned pretty much like adolescent boys into their 20s and beyond. And in those circumstances the men would - very ordinarily - marry women ten or more years younger than themselves.

It would certainly seem to be a recipe for the women to routinely be considered immature, when compared to husbands so much their senior in age . . .

Elvis met Priscilla when she was 14 and he was 24. He married her 7 years later. Guess where she lived before the marriage? She moved to Graceland when she was 17. Four years later they were married. Never heard anyone call him a pedophile. Prince Charles first met Diana when she was 16 and has has said he knew he wanted her to one day be his wife. He got his wish when she was 20 and he was 32. No one ever insinuated that I know of that he was a pedophile for being attracted to a 16 year old.
